Iberdrola España has secured more than EUR 170 million in funding for energy storage projects from the first call for innovative energy storage projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) 2021-2027, awarded by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE). The funding will support a comprehensive portfolio of energy storage technologies across six autonomous communities in Spain.

Project Portfolio and Funding Allocation

The company will allocate the funding across three distinct categories of energy storage projects. EUR 130 million will be dedicated to co-financing 11 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), while EUR 22 million will support three industrial thermal storage projects. An additional EUR 18 million will fund the expansion of a pumped storage project.

The battery projects will be strategically distributed across multiple regions, with Extremadura receiving four installations, Galicia three, Castilla y León two, and Asturias and Andalusia each one. These batteries will have an average power capacity of 35-40 MW, with 10 of them featuring shared-access capabilities that enable actions across projects.

Technology Integration and Hybridization

The battery installations will incorporate various approaches to renewable energy integration. Five of the battery systems will be hybridized with photovoltaic technology, while another five will be combined with wind energy. One system will operate as a stand-alone installation, functioning independently from other energy sources. The three industrial thermal storage projects will provide a combined capacity of 190 MWht and will be positioned in Andalusia, the Valencian Community, and Galicia.

These installations will specifically serve the food and beverage, ceramics, and canning industries. The pumped storage project will enhance the capacity of the Torrejón plant, which is located between the Torrejón-Tajo and Alcántara reservoirs.

Iberdrola España's Energy Storage Leadership

Iberdrola España has established itself as a leader in energy storage through hydroelectric and pumped-storage generation, with 4.5 GW of installed capacity. The company's portfolio includes notable pumped-hydroelectric plants, including La Muela, Villarino, Támega, and Santiago-Sil-Xares. The company pioneered energy storage development with lithium-ion batteries in Spain. In 2021, Iberdrola España became the first company to install a battery hybridized with photovoltaic technology at Campo Arañuelo III in Extremadura.

Current Operations and Development Pipeline

Iberdrola España currently operates several battery installations across different regions. The company maintains a 20 MWh battery in Puertollano, which stores energy from a nearby solar plant to generate green hydrogen for what is described as the largest industrial green hydrogen plant in Europe. In the Basque Country, the company operates two battery systems: one in Abadiño, Biscay, connected to the evacuation of the Oiz wind farm and capable of independent operation, and another in Álava that stores wind energy from the Elgea-Urkilla wind farm.

The company has six additional batteries in advanced construction stages across Castilla y León, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, and Andalusia. These projects have been recognized as Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) in the renewable energy, green hydrogen, and storage division (ERHA).
