The HyCARB project, led by Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), has been awarded EUR 45 million (approximately USD 49 million) by NWO and the National Growth Fund (via Government of Netherlands) to develop green hydrogen solutions for a sustainable chemical industry. The initiative focuses on producing carbon-based chemicals using green hydrogen, green electricity, and captured CO₂. The HyCarb consortium is a collaboration between nine universities, five universities of applied sciences (UAS), three research institutes and 30 companies.
Key Objectives includes
Developing cost- and energy-efficient technologies for sustainable fuel and chemical production.
Investigating advanced equipment and components for electric process heat.
Conducting lab studies alongside techno-economic and life-cycle assessments to support a carbon-free chemical industry.
Green Hydrogen Focus
The project involves a broad consortium of knowledge institutions and companies, aiming to accelerate hydrogen production and its application in the chemical sector, a critical component of the Dutch economy. This effort aligns with the broader energy transition, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions through green chemistry and green electrons.
Industry Applications
The funding will be directed toward creating green hydrogen solutions specifically designed for the chemical industry's sustainability needs. This represents HyCarb's strategic approach to developing targeted applications for green hydrogen technology in industrial chemical processes.
