Chinese lithium-ion manufacturer Hithium and system integrator BOS Power have signed a supply agreement for 3GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) deployments across the Nordic region. The agreement covers projects in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway through 2027.
Partnership Details and Technical Support
Under the agreement, Hithium will supply BOS Power with battery energy storage system technology for projects throughout the Nordic countries. As part of the partnership, Hithium will provide BOS Power with technical training and authorize the company as a certified service provider. BOS Power operates as an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm, system integrator, and service provider specializing in sustainable propulsion, energy storage, and power generation solutions.
The company is part of the conglomerate Bertel O. Steen and serves as the sole authorized distributor and service partner in the Nordics for the Rolls-Royce Systems Products and Solutions mtu line of products, which includes BESS solutions.
Current Project Activity
BOS Power said the first project under the agreement with Hithium is already under construction in Denmark, though the company did not provide specific details about the project. The firm was recently enlisted by independent power producer Eurowind Energy to install a 45 MWh BESS at a wind and solar plant in Skive, Denmark. This system would be larger than the current largest online system in the country, a 43 MWh system that was completed in May.

Nordic Market Dynamics
The Nordic region, particularly Sweden and Finland, is experiencing increased grid-scale BESS activity. This growth is driven primarily by high ancillary service prices as more renewables come online and legacy hydropower fleets age. Historically, these hydropower systems provided most ancillary services in the region. Recent project developments in Finland demonstrate the market activity, with project owners Ingrid Capacity and NTR moving forward with plans to build 110 MWh and 140 MWh projects, respectively, in March and April.
Hithium's Market Position and Technology
Hithium is one of only a handful of large-scale lithium-ion battery cell manufacturers that focus entirely on the BESS segment. The company also manufactures its own battery energy storage systems and has significantly increased its market share in the industry over the past few years, according to research firm Rho Motion. The company recently made headlines with the first deployments of BESS using its 1175Ah 'long-duration' cells for a project in Saudi Arabia.
This represents a significant advancement from the industry standard of 314Ah cells that have been used for the past few years, which is approximately one-quarter of Hithium's capacity. Even recent increases in the industry have only reached slightly over 600Ah, still half of Hithium's cell capacity.
