Google will formally kick off its USD 15 billion data center project in Andhra Pradesh on April 28, marking the largest single foreign direct investment in India. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Google's top executives, including Thomas Kurian.

Project Details and Timeline

The massive data center hub will have a combined capacity of 1 GW and comprise three data center campuses near Visakhapatnam. The three locations are Adavivaram village in Visakhapatnam district, Tarluvada village in Visakhapatnam district, and Rambilli in Anakapalli district. According to sources, the formal kick-off will be held at either the Tarluvada or Rambilli site.

The three data centers are expected to be commissioned by July 2028. This timeline comes six months after Google and the Andhra Pradesh government signed a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi on October 14.

Land Allocation and Infrastructure

The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated a total of 601.4 acres of land for the project across the three locations. A senior official who did not wish to be identified revealed the specific land allocations: 174.8 acres at Rambilli, 160 acres at Adavivaram and Mudasarlova, and 266.6 acres at Tarluvada.

The land has been handed over to Raiden Infotech India Private Limited, Google's subsidiary that is implementing the project. The three high-end data centers will require the installation and landing of three high-capacity submarine cables, dedicated cable landing stations, and high-capacity metro fiber lines and telecommunications infrastructure.

Partnership Structure

Raiden Infotech India has partnered with Adani Infra (India) Limited to establish the data center hub. Following a request from Raiden Infotech India, the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) approved the allotment of 601.4 acres of land to Adani Infra Limited.

Three Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), all fully owned by Adani Infra Limited, have been formed to manage the different locations. The land allocations have been distributed among these entities: Vizag Hyperscale Data Center Park Limited received 160 acres at Adavivaram and Mudasarlova, Vizag Mega Data Center Park Limited was allocated 266.6 acres at Tarluvada, and Vizag Rambilli Data Center Park Limited received 174.8 acres at Rambilli.

Global Context and Significance

Currently, Google and its subsidiaries operate data centers in 11 countries: the United States, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Belgium, and Chile. These facilities are spread across 29 geographic locations worldwide.

The data center cluster planned for Visakhapatnam is expected to become Asia's largest data center hub. The $15 billion investment represents a significant milestone for foreign direct investment in India's technology infrastructure sector.

The project timeline shows rapid progress from the initial agreement to implementation. The MoU was signed in October, and within six months, the formal groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 28. This accelerated timeline demonstrates the priority both Google and the Andhra Pradesh government have placed on the project's development.

The scale of the infrastructure requirements reflects the magnitude of the planned operations. The need for three high-capacity submarine cables and dedicated cable landing stations indicates the data centers will serve not only domestic requirements but also regional and international connectivity needs. The metro fiber lines and telecommunications infrastructure will provide the necessary connectivity backbone for the 1 GW capacity across all three campuses.
