Gujarat Industries Power Company Ltd. (GIPCL) has successfully commissioned the third phase of 105 MW of its 600 MW solar project at the Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat. This latest addition brings the total operational capacity at the Khavda site to 315 MW.

Phased Development at Khavda

The solar project at Khavda is being developed in phases as part of GIPCL's larger 600 MW solar initiative. The first phase of 105 MW was operationalized in June 2025, followed by the second phase of 105 MW in September 2025. The recently commissioned third phase adds another 105 MW to the site's capacity.

The Khavda Renewable Energy Park, where GIPCL's solar project is located, has a total capacity of 2,375 MW. The park serves as a major renewable energy hub in Gujarat, accommodating multiple solar power projects.

GIPCL's Expanded Solar Portfolio

With the addition of the latest 105 MW of capacity, GIPCL's total installed solar power capacity has increased to 652 MW. The company has been actively expanding its solar portfolio across Gujarat through various projects and locations.

In May 2025, GIPCL commissioned a 75 MW Vastan Group captive solar power plant on reclaimed land at the Vastan Mine in Taluka Vastan, Surat district. The company also operates a 100 MW solar project in the Raghanesda Solar Park, which was commissioned in 2021.

GIPCL's presence in the Gujarat Solar Park at Village Charanka, in Patan district, comprises two projects: a 75 MW solar project commissioned in 2019 and an 80 MW solar project commissioned in 2017.

Diversified Energy Portfolio

Beyond solar power, GIPCL maintains a diversified energy portfolio that includes wind and thermal power generation. The company has commissioned 112.4 MW of wind power projects in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat.

GIPCL also operates 810 MW of thermal capacity, demonstrating its involvement across multiple energy generation technologies. The company's energy mix reflects a combination of renewable and conventional power sources.

Future Development Plans

In August 2025, the Energy and Petrochemicals Department of the Government of Gujarat approved GIPCL's proposal to establish a 700-750 MW Lignite-based Power Plant at Valia. This approval represents a significant expansion of the company's thermal power capacity.

GUVNL's Board has granted in-principle approval for the procurement of power from GIPCL's proposed 700 MW Lignite-based Power Plant for a period of 25 years. This approval is subject to final approval from the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC).

The lignite-based power plant project indicates GIPCL's continued investment in expanding its generation capacity to meet growing energy demands in Gujarat. The 25-year power procurement agreement provides the proposed project with long-term revenue visibility.

GIPCL's systematic approach to developing renewable energy projects, particularly at the Khavda site, demonstrates the company's commitment to expanding clean energy capacity in Gujarat. The phased commissioning of solar projects allows for gradual capacity addition while ensuring operational efficiency at each stage of development.
