Germany’s energy regulator BNetzA has initiated a tender for offshore wind turbine capacity seeking to award 958 MW of projects to the bidder with the lowest subsidy requirements across three areas in the North and Baltic Seas.

This new auction is Germanys third for offshore wind projects but the first to run on a centralized basis. The first two auctions saw developers bid in with their own projects instead of bidding for sites identified by the German government. The procurement round was opened on Friday, and bids are due by September 1, which will be capped at EUR 73/MWh.

Germany aims to tender 9.7 GW of offshore wind projects by 2025 in order to achieve its target of 20 GW by the end of the decade.

Out of the 958 MW, two projects with capacities of 225 MW and 433 MW will be tendered in the North sea, and another 300 MW project will be tendered in the Baltic sea. All power plants are expected to be up and running in 2026.

Germany is one of six countries among the U.K., Netherlands, France, Denmark, and Norway, in Europe planning to hold auctions for new offshore wind capacity in 2021 with at least 15 GW of projects up for grabs.
