Georgia Power (electric utility company) has officially opened a new battery energy storage system near Valdosta, Georgia, marking one of the utility's first deployments of battery storage directly connected to a solar generation facility.
The Moody Battery Facility, located just outside Valdosta in Lowndes County, brings 49.5 megawatts of flexible storage capacity to the state's power grid and was completed ahead of schedule, the company announced.
Facility Design and Function
The Moody Battery Facility is designed to capture renewable energy produced by the adjacent Moody solar facility during periods of lower electricity demand and store it for release when demand rises.
Georgia Power specifically cited cold winter mornings as an example of when the stored energy would be deployed. The system can discharge its full 49.5 megawatts of stored capacity over a four-hour period, matching the output of the co-located solar installation.
The co-location of battery storage with solar generation represents a key design principle behind the project. By pairing the two systems, Georgia Power aims to address the intermittent nature of solar power, ensuring that energy generated during off-peak hours does not go to waste and can instead be directed to the grid when it is needed most.
Rick Anderson, senior vice president and senior production officer for Georgia Power, emphasized the project's significance for grid reliability and cost management.
"This project not only enhances grid resiliency but highlights our commitment to adding cost-effective resources to our diverse generation mix through programs reviewed and approved with the Georgia PSC," Anderson said. He also acknowledged Crowder Engineering and other companies involved in delivering the project ahead of its planned completion date.
Community and Regulatory Partnership
The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together a broad coalition of public officials and community leaders. Georgia Public Service Commission Chairman Jason Shaw attended the event alongside Lowndes County Manager Paige Dukes, members of the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners, and representatives of the Valdosta City Council. Georgia Power leaders were also present for the celebration.
The gathering was described as reflecting the partnerships that enabled the project to move forward and underscored what officials characterized as the lasting economic impact the facility is expected to bring to Lowndes County.
The project was approved through the Georgia PSC's Integrated Resource Plan process, which the company uses to align new generation and storage resources with the state's growing power demands.

Part of a Broader Four-Project Wave
The Moody facility was approved alongside three other battery energy storage projects in Bibb, Cherokee, and Floyd counties. Georgia Power stated it is nearing completion of those remaining projects, which were previously approved under the 2023 IRP Update. Together, the four projects represent a combined storage capacity of 715 megawatts.
These projects reflect the first significant wave of battery storage deployment for Georgia Power and lay the groundwork for a much larger expansion that the Georgia PSC has since approved.
Nine Additional BESS Facilities Approved Statewide
Beyond the current four-project program, the Georgia PSC has approved construction of nine additional battery energy storage facilities distributed across eight sites throughout the state. The new facilities will collectively add more than 3,000 megawatts of planned storage capacity to Georgia Power's generation portfolio.
The sites were selected based on a range of deployment considerations, including the ability to use existing company-owned land, proximity to substations, and opportunities to add storage at existing plant locations. The approved locations include Plants Bowen, Hammond, McIntosh, Wansley, and Yates, as well as stand-alone facilities in Hall and McDuffie counties.
When combined with the 715 megawatts nearing completion under the current program, the new approvals push Georgia Power's total planned battery storage expansion well past 3,700 megawatts across the state.
Solar-Paired Storage Projects Also Approved
In addition to the standalone battery storage program, the Georgia PSC has approved two new solar generation systems that will each be paired with battery storage.
The combined capacity of these new solar-plus-storage projects is 350 megawatts. Georgia Power said the projects are designed to maximize solar energy generation while minimizing land disturbance. The locations for these new solar-and-storage facilities are in Laurens and Dougherty counties.
The dual focus on large-scale standalone battery storage and co-located solar-plus-storage systems reflects Georgia Power's stated strategy of building a diversified and flexible generation mix capable of meeting what the company has described as the state's increasing demand for energy.
