GEN-I, the Slovenian energy trading company, has taken over the commercial management of two large-scale battery energy storage systems in Bulgaria totalling 200 MW of output capacity and 505 MWh of storage capacity, while simultaneously signing an agreement covering nine further projects that are expected to double its Bulgarian battery storage portfolio within a year.
Two Systems Now Under Management
The first of the two facilities is located in the Bulgarian town of Brusartsi, where GEN-I has assumed commercial management and market optimisation of a battery energy storage system with an output capacity of 150 MW and a storage capacity of 379 MWh.
The second facility is situated in Byala Slatina and carries an output capacity of 50 MW and a storage capacity of 126 MWh. Both systems are already connected to the electricity grid.
Both projects were developed and constructed by SUNOTEC, which the company describes as one of Europe's leading developers of solar power plants and energy storage systems.
GEN-I is acting as an exclusive partner for asset optimisation and energy trading across both sites, providing commercial management services that include access to electricity markets, balancing services, market optimisation, and a minimum guaranteed revenue level. As part of the arrangement, GEN-I also assumes the associated market risks.

Nine Additional Projects Agreed Under Broader Partnership
Beyond the two operational facilities, GEN-I and SUNOTEC have signed an agreement covering nine additional battery energy storage projects in Bulgaria. Those projects carry a combined output capacity of 195 MW and a combined storage capacity of 782 MWh.
They are being developed by SUNOTEC as part of its investment strategy in Bulgaria and are expected to enter full commercial operation within the next twelve months.
GEN-I described the Brusartsi and Byala Slatina projects as the beginning of a broader strategic partnership with SUNOTEC in the field of battery energy storage, with the nine additional projects representing the next phase of that collaboration.

Portfolio Target Set for End of 2026
Igor Koprivnikar, Member of the Management Board of GEN-I, commented on the agreement at the time of signing. He said the partnership with SUNOTEC confirms GEN-I is establishing itself as one of the leading providers of commercial management and market optimisation services for battery energy storage systems in the region.
He described the Bulgarian projects as an important milestone in the company's international growth strategy and as evidence of partner confidence in its expertise, technology, and trading capabilities.
Koprivnikar stated that, with the accelerated international expansion of its portfolio, GEN-I expects to exceed 800 MW of battery storage capacity under its management by the end of 2026.
Bulgaria Positioned as Key Storage Market
GEN-I characterised Bulgaria as one of Europe's most promising energy storage markets and said it is significantly expanding its international footprint in the country through these agreements.
The company noted that battery storage is becoming one of the key pillars of the European energy transition, and that as renewable generation continues to grow, the ability to optimise flexibility across wholesale electricity and ancillary services markets will increasingly determine the value created by storage assets.
The newly agreed projects across both the operational sites and the nine pipeline facilities would, according to GEN-I, double the battery storage capacity it manages in Bulgaria within the next year.
Company Background and Regional Standing
GEN-I said it was named the leading power and energy commodities trader in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe for the second consecutive year, according to the Energy Risk Commodity Rankings 2026. The company operates in 27 countries and describes its trading infrastructure as combining global market access with an in-depth understanding of regional market characteristics.
The company said the Bulgarian expansion is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its position as one of the leading providers of battery storage asset management and market optimisation services across Central and Southeastern Europe.
