ContourGlobal, the international independent power producer, has secured a battery energy storage supply agreement with CATL covering 3 gigawatt-hours of storage systems for deployment across three projects in the United Kingdom, Greece, and Chile.
The deal, announced on August 10, 2026, marks the first bundle agreement between the two companies and represents a significant expansion of ContourGlobal's utility-scale storage footprint.
Terms and Technology at the Core of the Agreement
The agreement covers a total of 526 containers, each rated at 5.64 megawatt-hours, all configured for four hours of continuous discharge. The technology at the heart of the supply deal is a containerized liquid-cooling integrated battery energy storage system built around CATL's large-format lithium iron phosphate cells.
The design incorporates integrated liquid-cooling architecture alongside built-in fire detection and suppression systems, which ContourGlobal says ensure stable operation across a wide range of temperatures and mitigate thermal propagation.
The system also includes a proprietary cell-degradation management system that continuously monitors and manages the aging of individual cells throughout the operational life of the projects.
CATL has committed to taking back and recycling the units at the end of their useful life, in line with European regulatory requirements on battery sustainability and circular economy principles.
Additionally, the projects using CATL technology will be equipped to support grid-forming functionality where required by system operators, even though such services are not yet fully recognized or remunerated under most current regulatory frameworks.
The Three Projects Covered by the Deal
The supply agreement spans three recently announced projects that span two continents. The largest is the Wallace stand-alone battery energy storage project in Scotland, rated at 500 megawatts and 2,000 megawatt-hours. Wallace marks ContourGlobal's entry into the United Kingdom market and is currently in advanced development.
The second project is the Taxiarches facility in Greece, a 100-megawatt and 400 megawatt-hour stand-alone storage installation. The third is Los Maitenes in Chile, a hybrid project that combines 131 megawatts-peak of solar photovoltaic generation with 90 megawatts and 360 megawatt-hours of battery storage. Both the Greek and Chilean projects are already under construction.
ContourGlobal described the agreement structure as providing flexibility to align supply with the evolution of its development pipeline, characterizing it as a framework that standardizes engineering, testing, commissioning, and long-term asset management across multiple countries.

Building on an Existing Storage Portfolio
ContourGlobal currently operates 3 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage projects across Europe and the Americas. Its existing fleet includes a 202 megawatt and 500 megawatt-hour stand-alone battery storage installation in Bulgaria, which the company describes as one of the largest in Eastern Europe.
In Chile, the company already operates 2.5 gigawatt-hours of battery storage across two hybrid projects, Victor Jara and Quillagua, located in the Atacama Desert regions of Tarapacá and Antofagasta.
The company has also separately acquired a 1.6 gigawatt battery storage portfolio under development in Italy, though that portfolio falls outside the scope of this supply agreement with CATL.
ContourGlobal cited strong growth in hyperscale data centers and power demand from digital infrastructure as context for its accelerated push into utility-scale hybrid and standalone storage projects across the regions covered by the new agreement.
What the Companies Said
Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of ContourGlobal, framed the agreement as more than a procurement deal. "Beyond equipment supply, we are establishing a standardized utility-scale BESS platform across multiple countries, enabling consistent engineering, testing, commissioning, and long-term asset management," he said.
"By harmonizing technical requirements and project execution practices, we reduce delivery risk, accelerate project deployment and create a scalable model for continued growth of our storage business."
LB Tan, Chief Commercial Officer and Co-President of Sales and Marketing at CATL, said the collaboration brings together CATL's battery technology and ContourGlobal's expertise in developing energy infrastructure.
"With a shared vision, we are delivering safe, reliable and long-term value for customers in the energy transition journey of Europe and the whole world," he said.
A First for Both Companies in This Format
ContourGlobal noted that the CATL technology being deployed under this agreement represents the first use of this particular battery system within its portfolio.
The bundle agreement structure itself is also described as a first between the two companies, with ContourGlobal highlighting the model as one designed to support the continued scaling of its storage business across multiple geographies simultaneously.
