Allens Advises Lenders on Stage 3 Financing of Quinbrook's Supernode BESS Project in Queensland, Australia

Law firm Allens has advised a syndicate of domestic and international lenders on the financing of Stage 3 of Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners' Supernode battery energy storage system project located in Brendale, Queensland, bringing the total financed capacity at the precinct to approximately 780MW/3,072MWh.

Stage 3 Expands One of the Southern Hemisphere's Largest BESS Developments

The latest financing adds approximately 260MW/1,216MWh of grid-scale storage capacity to the Supernode precinct, which sits at the central node of Queensland's electricity transmission network.

 

This expansion follows the earlier Stage 1 and Stage 2 debt financing package, which covered 520MW/1,856MWh and was valued at USD 722 million. That earlier package was described at the time as Australia's largest standalone BESS project financing.

With Stage 3 now financed, the Supernode precinct is among the largest battery energy storage developments in the Southern Hemisphere. The project is located in Brendale, Queensland, and the latest transaction was announced on 7 August 2026.

 

Lender Syndicate Spans Domestic and International Institutions

The lender syndicate advising on the Stage 3 financing includes Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deutsche Bank, MUFG Bank, DNB Bank, and Rabobank. Allens' involvement spans all three stages of the Supernode project, with the firm having previously advised the same lender group on the Stage 1 and Stage 2 debt financing package.

Co-Located Energy and Digital Infrastructure Signals Broader Development Vision

Beyond its battery storage function, the Supernode precinct is positioned as part of a broader hyperscale development at Brendale. Planning approvals have been secured covering the potential for data centers and associated infrastructure alongside the BESS substation. Allens described the development as one of Australia's most significant co-located energy and digital infrastructure projects.

Rob Watt, the partner leading the transaction for Allens, pointed to the wider significance of this convergence. "The financing reflects continued confidence in the role of large-scale battery infrastructure in supporting the energy transition and improving the reliability of electricity supply, and signals the growing convergence of battery storage with data centre development as a defining feature of Australia's energy landscape," he said.

Transaction Builds on Allen's Track Record in BESS Financings

The Stage 3 Supernode financing is the latest in a series of battery storage and energy transition transactions on which Allens has acted. The firm previously advised Akaysha Energy on the Elaine BESS project, advised lenders on the Gnarwarre BESS project, and recently advised ENGIE on a virtual storage agreement with AGL.

 

The firm's advisory role across all three stages of the Supernode project reflects its continuing involvement in what has grown into one of Australia's most closely watched large-scale storage developments.

The Supernode project's scale and its combination of grid-scale battery infrastructure with potential data centre development represent an emerging model in Australia's energy sector, where storage assets located at strategic transmission nodes are increasingly being paired with high-energy digital infrastructure to maximise the utilisation of grid connections and supporting facilities.

Project Located at Strategic Point in Queensland's Transmission Network

The Brendale site's position at the central node of Queensland's electricity transmission network is a key feature of the Supernode precinct's strategic value. Grid-scale BESS projects positioned at transmission network nodes are capable of providing frequency control, voltage support, and dispatchable capacity to the broader electricity system, functions that have taken on increasing importance as Australia's energy mix transitions away from thermal generation.

The total financed capacity of approximately 780MW/3,072MWh, achieved across the three stages of the Supernode project, places it among the most substantial battery storage installations in the Southern Hemisphere by both power and energy metrics.

 

The combined scale of the three stages reflects the depth of lender appetite for large-scale battery infrastructure in Australia, with five financial institutions participating in the Stage 3 syndicate drawn from both the domestic banking market and major international institutions operating across the Asia-Pacific and European regions.
