Fortescue officially launched its first green hydrogen plant in the USA in Buckeye, Arizona. A ground-breaking ceremony was conducted to formally start the construction of the green hydrogen facility named Arizona Hydrogen. Furthermore, the facility covers an area of over 158 acres. The launch marks a new phase in developing the company’s USD 550 million venture into green hydrogen projects in the United States.

The production plant is expected to create over 400 jobs during operations, including 40 direct-paying facility jobs during operations and more than 2,000 jobs during construction. Arizona Hydrogen is slated to produce up to 11,000 tons of green hydrogen annually and is strategically positioned to significantly contribute to the decarbonization of the heavy-duty on-road transportation sector.
The southwest market consumes approximately 5 billion gallons of diesel annually in heavy-duty transport, making green hydrogen a vital player in reducing emissions in the mobility sector.
Fortescue Executive Chair and Founder Dr. Andrew Forrest, AO, praised the US Administration’s commitment to bolstering renewable energy projects in the US. “The US has made serious strides in attracting global investment in green hydrogen and decarbonization projects, like Fortescue’s solar and wind-powered Arizona Hydrogen facility.” Dr. Forrest said.
Fortescue is actively expanding its green hydrogen projects across the world. Here are some of the upcoming projects:
Holmaneset Project, Bremanger, Norway: This is a 300 MW green hydrogen and green ammonia facility.
Hemnes Municipality, Norway: Plans are underway for another 300 MW facility.
Collaboration with Tree Energy Solutions: Fortescue Future Industries and Tree Energy Solutions have agreed to develop the world’s largest green hydrogen integrated project to help Europe mitigate its current energy and climate crises.
