Fervo Energy has declared commercial operation at the first power plant of its Cape Station project in Beaver County, Utah, achieving the milestone on September 30, 2026, one day before its contractual commercial operation date.

According to a company press release issued October 1, 2026, the achievement makes Cape Station the first greenfield enhanced geothermal development in the world to reach contractual commercial operations.

The milestone marks the first time that enhanced geothermal systems, or EGS, have delivered power at commercial scale under a contractual framework, and the company says it demonstrates the technology can provide reliable, 24/7 carbon-free electricity on an industry-leading timeline.

From Grid Synchronization to Revenue Generation

Cape Station synchronized to the grid on September 24, 2026, and declared commercial operation just six days later on September 30. The first GeoBlock, as Fervo calls its modular power units, is now generating revenue under the terms of the company's power purchase agreement. The first GeoBlock achieved 33 megawatts of net power production, meeting the expected production threshold under the PPA.

Fervo built and commissioned the facility in just 23 months, a timeframe the company describes as remarkable for a first-of-its-kind infrastructure project. Fervo says it sees substantial opportunity to compress that timeline further as it applies lessons learned across its pipeline, and it is confident it can reach an 18-month construction timeline for future GeoBlocks.

Company Leadership on the Milestone

Tim Latimer, CEO and Co-Founder of Fervo Energy, characterized the achievement as significant for the company and the broader energy sector.

"Reaching commercial operations at Cape Station is both a huge milestone for Fervo, and a turning point for the entire energy industry," Latimer said. "No team has ever built a project like this anywhere in the world, and we did it ahead of schedule. We are excited to prove that Fervo Energy can bring a new track record of execution to the power sector, an industry where project delays are often the norm."

David Ulrey, CFO of Fervo Energy, framed the commercial operation date as the start of a revenue build-out for the company.

"This is a defining moment at Fervo and it's one we're proud to deliver ahead of schedule," Ulrey said. "With over 1 gigawatt of binding PPAs signed across our portfolio, the COD of this first GeoBlock is the beginning of our build into a durable base of predictable, long-term revenue generation. We remain focused on disciplined capital execution as we bring the remaining Phase I GeoBlocks online and advance Phase II toward its 2028 COD."

Dawn Owens, SVP and Head of Development & Commercial Markets, credited the company's field team for the result.

"Getting our first GeoBlock to commercial operation reflects the strength of our execution and the discipline of our team on the ground," Owens said. "We are on track to bring the remaining Phase I GeoBlocks online by January 1, 2027. Every GeoBlock we bring online makes the next one faster and more predictable, and that repeatability is the foundation of how we scale and bring down costs."

Cape Station's Expansion Plans

Cape Station's Phase I comprises approximately 100 megawatts of capacity across three 33-megawatt GeoBlocks.

With the first GeoBlock now online and producing at 33 megawatts of net power, commissioning continues at the remaining two Phase I GeoBlocks, which are expected to reach contractual commercial operation by January 1, 2027.

Beyond Phase I, the project's next phase, an additional 400 megawatts, is already under construction, with an expected commercial operation date in 2028.

As Phase I comes online and Phase II advances toward its 2028 COD, Fervo expects Cape Station's contracted capacity to translate into a growing, long-term revenue stream underpinned by multi-year offtake agreements.

About Fervo Energy

Fervo Energy, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker FRVO, describes itself as a modern power company focused on delivering affordable, dependable new power supply. Through large-scale deployment of enhanced geothermal systems, the company has established what it calls a repeatable, industrial approach to building utility-scale power.

Fervo says it is working to transform geothermal into a clean, reliable, cost-competitive solution designed to meet rising electricity demand from AI hyperscalers, utilities, and an increasingly electricity-intensive economy.

Stay Ahead of the United States Power Grid Expansion

What separates market leaders from laggards in the power sector? Timely, accurate project intelligence. Across the United States, billions of dollars are flowing into transmission upgrades, renewable integration, gas-fired generation, and grid modernization, and the winners are those who spot opportunities before competitors even know they exist.

Manual tracking of utility commission filings, regulatory announcements, and utility procurement plans is slow, error-prone, and incomplete. By the time a project surfaces in the news, the contracting decisions may already be made.

The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research delivers verified, continuously updated intelligence on power sector developments across the United States, so your business development team never misses a beat.
