Fervo Energy has achieved First Power at Cape Station, its flagship geothermal development in Beaver County, Utah, marking the first time a utility-scale enhanced geothermal systems project has synchronized to the grid and exported electricity anywhere in the world.
The Houston-based company made the announcement on September 24, 2026, less than five months after completing its initial public offering on Nasdaq in May of that year.
A Milestone Four Years in the Making
The achievement at Cape Station follows years of subsurface and surface development, drilling, and project financing. Fervo described the milestone as converting that accumulated work into an operating power plant that is now actively selling electricity to the grid.
The company previously demonstrated its enhanced geothermal systems technology at a smaller installation called Project Red, which has been supplying electricity to the grid since 2023. Cape Station, however, represents the first deployment of the technology at utility scale in a greenfield setting, meaning a site with no prior geothermal infrastructure.
Tim Latimer, CEO and Co-Founder of Fervo Energy, called the development a turning point for the broader geothermal sector. "This is a gamechanger for the geothermal industry. It establishes EGS as the defining new power generation technology of our time and we believe it shows that the commercial and technical maturity of EGS is ready to meet the urgent need for reliable, clean power," Latimer said in the company's announcement.
How Cape Station Is Structured
Cape Station Phase I is an approximately 100 megawatt installation made up of three 33-megawatt units that Fervo refers to as GeoBlocks. The first of those GeoBlocks achieved First Power and is expected to reach its contractual commercial operations date by October 1, 2026.
Fervo said it will continue ramping up the first GeoBlock as it brings the full well system online, while simultaneously commissioning the two remaining GeoBlocks, which are expected to reach their contractual commercial operations date by January 1, 2027.
Construction is already underway on the next phase of development at Cape Station, which will add an additional 400 megawatts of capacity. That phase carries an expected commercial operations date in 2028.
In total, contracted offtake at Cape Station sits at approximately 900 megawatts, which the company says is enough to power the equivalent of nearly one million U.S. homes annually. Fervo has also disclosed that it has more than four gigawatts of capacity in development overall.

The Technology Behind Enhanced Geothermal
Enhanced geothermal systems differ from conventional geothermal energy in that they access heat from rock formations that do not naturally contain the water or permeability required for traditional geothermal extraction. Fervo has adapted horizontal drilling techniques from the oil and gas industry, allowing multiple wells to be drilled from a single surface pad and unlocking geothermal resources that were previously inaccessible.
Jack Norbeck, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder of Fervo Energy, described the engineering rigor that preceded the First Power milestone. "Cape Station works because we treated the subsurface like an engineering challenge. Years of drilling, completion design, subsurface modeling, and flow testing led to this moment, and this is the validation that matters most. First Power is proof the science works," Norbeck said.
Because enhanced geothermal draws continuously on heat from deep underground, it produces electricity around the clock regardless of weather conditions or time of day. The company characterizes this as firm power, distinguishing it from solar and wind resources, which generate electricity only when conditions permit.
Why Firm, Carbon-Free Power Is Attracting Attention
The timing of Cape Station's First Power milestone coincides with what Fervo describes as the fastest growth in U.S. electricity demand in decades, driven by expansion in data centers, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and reshored manufacturing.
The company argues that enhanced geothermal is one of the only carbon-free resources capable of meeting that demand on a continuous, around-the-clock basis, a characteristic that has made it increasingly attractive to utilities and large technology companies seeking reliable clean power supplies.
Fervo also pointed to several other attributes of geothermal plants as competitive advantages. Geothermal installations require a comparatively small surface footprint relative to their electricity output, produce zero operational emissions, and draw on a domestic supply chain that is largely based within the United States.
A Publicly Traded Company at an Early Stage of a Large Build-Out
Fervo Energy completed its initial public offering on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol FRVO in May 2026, and the First Power announcement at Cape Station came just over four months later. The company framed the achievement as the first megawatts of what it described as a multi-gigawatt development program, with 900 megawatts fully contracted and more than four gigawatts of total capacity identified for future development.
The company said its approach is built around what it calls a repeatable, industrial method for constructing utility-scale power plants using enhanced geothermal technology, targeting customers that include AI hyperscalers, utilities, and industries operating in an increasingly electricity-intensive economy.
Powering Smarter Decisions Across Every Voltage Level in the United States
The energy transition is reshaping infrastructure investment across the United States at a pace that leaves little room for guesswork. Whether you are tracking utility-scale solar buildouts, grid modernization efforts, or conventional generation upgrades, staying ahead of project movement requires more than occasional industry updates. It demands a dedicated intelligence system.
The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research was built precisely for that purpose, aggregating and organizing power sector project data so that developers, contractors, and investors can act on opportunities before they become common knowledge.
From early-stage planning through to completion, the platform gives power industry professionals a structured view of the entire project lifecycle, ensuring that no significant development across the United States slips through the cracks.
