Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation has announced the start of construction on its new grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS), the Eurus Hokkaido Ikeda Town Battery Park, located in Ikeda Town, Nakagawa District, Hokkaido. Construction officially commenced on September 1, 2025, with commercial operations expected to begin in October 2027.

Project Details

The facility will be equipped with lithium-ion batteries offering a rated output of 10 MW and a storage capacity of 27.42 MWh. Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) works for the project are being carried out by Japan's KYOCERA Communication Systems Co., Ltd. The project has been selected by Japan’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy under its FY2024 subsidy program, which aims to promote grid-connected battery energy storage.

This makes it Eurus Energy Group’s fourth BESS project in Japan and its first in Hokkaido.

Addressing Renewable Energy Fluctuations

As Japan moves toward its 2050 carbon neutrality goal, the adoption of renewable energy continues to rise. However, challenges persist due to the intermittent nature of wind and solar generation. Grid-connected storage facilities, such as the Eurus Hokkaido Battery Park, are designed to stabilize power supply and demand by storing excess renewable energy and releasing it when needed.

Eurus Energy will also deploy its proprietary VPP (Virtual Power Plant) platform, ReEra, which uses multi-use control to optimize the system’s performance and operations once the plant becomes operational.

Eurus Energy’s Broader Vision

Eurus Energy has already developed three BESS projects in Japan and one overseas, strengthening its role in advancing renewable energy integration. By combining energy storage with its expanding wind and solar portfolio, the company aims to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply while contributing to global environmental preservation and the creation of a sustainable society.

In a statement, the company reaffirmed its corporate philosophy of “Helping to preserve the global environment by disseminating and expanding clean energy technologies,” adding that battery energy storage systems will be key to achieving this vision.
