European Energy Grid-Connects 152 MWh of Battery Storage in Denmark

European Energy has brought two battery energy storage systems online in Denmark, connecting facilities at Stouby and Agersted that together deliver 38 MW and 152 MWh of combined storage capacity. Both systems are co-located with solar parks, forming hybrid renewable energy assets at each site.

Two Sites, One Strategy

The Stouby installation comprises a 28 MW / 112 MWh battery system paired with European Energy's 88 MW solar park, which entered operations in September 2024. The two assets share a single grid connection, combining electricity generation and storage behind a common point of interconnection.

 

At Agersted, a 10 MW / 40 MWh battery system has been integrated with an existing 31 MW solar park that has been operational since 2022. In both cases, the development, engineering, procurement, construction, and integration work was completed by European Energy within a year.

The systems are designed to store electricity when solar production exceeds demand and discharge it when needed, while also providing grid services including frequency regulation and balancing support.

 

Speed of Delivery Highlighted by Leadership

Poul Jacobsen, Executive Vice President and Head of EPC at European Energy, pointed to the pace of delivery at Agersted as a marker of the company's construction capabilities.

 

"Adding a 10 MW / 40 MWh battery system to an existing solar park and bringing it into operation within a year is another strong achievement by the project team," he said.

 

"The project required close coordination across engineering, civil works, electrical installation, and system integration. Completing the work within this timeframe demonstrates the maturity of our construction organisation and our experience in delivering increasingly complex renewable energy projects."

The ability to retrofit battery storage onto an already-operating solar facility without disruption to the existing asset underscores the operational complexity involved.

 

European Energy stated that both projects were developed, engineered, procured, constructed, and integrated within a year, indicating the company applied the same delivery timeline to both the greenfield hybrid at Stouby and the retrofit installation at Agersted.

Hybridisation as an Investor Proposition

European Energy has framed the Stouby commissioning specifically within its strategy of increasing portfolio value through hybridisation. The company describes this approach as integrating battery storage with generation assets to improve operational flexibility, unlock additional revenue streams, and strengthen the long-term investment case for institutional investors.

Thorvald Spanggaard, Executive Vice President and Head of Project Development at European Energy, articulated the investor rationale directly. "Institutional investors are increasingly looking for renewable energy assets that combine stable production with operational flexibility and multiple revenue streams," he said.

 

"Hybrid projects meet that demand by improving both asset quality and long-term resilience, making them increasingly attractive investment opportunities."

The positioning of hybrid assets as a product tailored to institutional capital reflects a broader shift in how renewable energy developers are structuring projects, moving beyond single-technology generation toward bundled assets that can offer more complex and varied income profiles.

Denmark Portfolio Now Exceeds 375 MWh

With the Stouby and Agersted systems now grid-connected, European Energy has brought its total operational battery storage in Denmark to 96.75 MW, providing more than 375 MWh of energy storage capacity. The two new installations represent a meaningful step in that accumulated total, adding 38 MW and 152 MWh to the Danish portfolio in a single announcement.

The company also noted that it will soon inaugurate its first operational battery storage system in Lithuania, marking a geographic extension of the storage programme beyond Denmark.

Broader Portfolio Expansion Across Europe and Australia

European Energy stated it is expanding its battery storage portfolio across Europe and Australia as part of its strategy to develop integrated renewable energy assets.

 

The company, which is headquartered in Copenhagen, develops, constructs, finances and operates wind, solar, Power-to-X and battery storage projects across more than 25 countries. It covers the full renewable energy value chain from early-stage development through to construction, financing, operations and asset management.

The Stouby and Agersted projects are presented as representative of the company's approach of pairing electricity generation with on-site storage to create assets designed to meet the requirements of long-term infrastructure investors.

 

The hybrid model, in which storage is physically co-located with a generation source and connected through a shared grid interface, is positioned as the defining structural characteristic of European Energy's current development pipeline.
