Corsica Sole Inaugurates Hertz 2 Battery Storage Facility in Estonia, Europe

Corsica Sole (independent solar energy producer) has inaugurated Hertz 2, a battery energy storage facility located in Aruküla, Estonia, completing a two-site complex that the French company says constitutes one of the most powerful energy storage installations in continental Europe.

A 200 MW Complex Takes Shape in the Baltics

Hertz 2 has a capacity of 100 MW and a storage capacity of 200 MWh. Combined with Hertz 1, which was commissioned last February at the same location, the two facilities together reach a total capacity of 200 MW and 400 MWh. Corsica Sole describes the combined complex as one of the largest battery energy storage systems in continental Europe.

Both facilities were developed through the Baltic Storage Platform, a joint venture established by Corsica Sole, Evecon, and Mirova. Hertz 2 is connected to the electricity transmission grid operated by Elering, Estonia's national transmission system operator.

The company says the facility is capable of responding to frequency variations within milliseconds, enabling it to provide system services, support the integration of renewable energy into the grid, and help limit fluctuations in the electricity market.

 

Strategic Timing as Baltic States Synchronize with Continental Europe

The inauguration of Hertz 2 comes as the Baltic countries complete their synchronization with the continental European power grid, a process that has elevated the strategic importance of grid stability infrastructure across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Corsica Sole frames the Hertz 2 installation within that context, describing energy storage facilities of this scale as playing a strategic role in strengthening the resilience of the power system and securing electricity supply across the region.

 

The company notes that when solar or wind generation exceeds consumption, batteries allow available electricity to be stored and released when demand rises, providing a continuous mechanism for balancing supply and demand.

The Hertz 1 and Hertz 2 projects together represent what Corsica Sole describes as the largest private investment made in the Estonian energy sector to date.

Fifteen Years of Island Grid Experience Brought to Continental Scale

Corsica Sole traces its origins in energy storage to work carried out on island power grids, where the absence of large interconnected networks makes battery systems essential to maintaining balance between electricity generation and consumption.

 

The company describes this background, spanning more than fifteen years, as having built expertise in particularly demanding environments that it is now applying to large-scale continental projects.
