The European Commission has selected 61 large-scale climate tech projects to share EUR 2.9 billion (USD 3.06 billion) in grants from the Innovation Fund, backing a suite of hydrogen and e-fuel ventures alongside clean mobility and low-carbon manufacturing initiatives.

The awards are funded by revenues generated under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), following the first dedicated net-zero call (IF24), which received 359 proposals requesting over EUR 21.7 billion (USD 22.9 billion).

Selected Projects Across Europe

Among the selected projects are several major hydrogen and e-fuel initiatives spanning multiple European countries. Spain's Luxia project will produce green hydrogen for ammonia and methanol production. Denmark's Arcadia e-Fuels will use hydrogen and biogenic CO2 for eSAF and eNAP production. The Czech Republic's H2CWay project focuses on developing hydrogen fuel cell buses.

Estonia's P2XH project will produce e-methanol and green hydrogen specifically for maritime and transport use. Italy's H2EAT project will develop hydrogen boilers, while Norway has two notable projects: ODIN, which will retrofit 15 Cessna 208B aircraft with H2-electric powertrains, and RjukanLH2, which will validate RFNBO-compliant LH2 bunkering for shortsea vessels.

Implementation Timeline and Process

The grant agreement phase is now underway with CINEA, with contracts to be confirmed in the first half of 2026. This marks a significant step in the European Union's commitment to advancing net-zero technologies by providing substantial financial backing for innovative projects across the continent.

Innovation Fund's Expanding Portfolio

The Innovation Fund has now committed EUR 15.6 billion (USD 16.5 billion) to more than 270 projects, including those under the second European Hydrogen Bank auction. In that September auction, just 8 of 15 green hydrogen projects advanced to final negotiations, underscoring the competitive nature of these funding opportunities. Wopke Hoekstra, EU Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth, commented on the initiative:

“The response to this call demonstrates the strength of our innovators and the determination of our companies to lead the global race for net zero technologies.” The funding represents a significant investment in Europe's transition to clean energy technologies, with projects spanning hydrogen production, e-fuel development, clean mobility solutions, and low-carbon manufacturing processes. The selected projects demonstrate the breadth of technological approaches being pursued across European member states to achieve net-zero emissions goals.
