Essar Invests $3.6 B to Set Up Green Hydrogen Plant in Gujarat

Essar Group, a metals-to-infrastructure conglomerate, has announced a significant investment of USD 3.6 Billion (INR 30,000 crore) over the next four years to set up a green hydrogen plant at Jamnagar in Gujarat. This ambitious greenfield project (to be one of the largest green hydrogen projects in India) marks a key step in the company's transition to clean energy and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions across various sectors.

The green hydrogen plant, to be developed by Essar Future Energy, will have a capacity of 1 GW and produce 1 million tonnes per annum of associated green molecules. The project will leverage 4.5 GW of renewable energy from Essar Renewables to electrolyze water, producing hydrogen and oxygen.

The plant's primary objective is to produce green ammonia, which can be easily transported and used as a cleaner alternative to traditional ammonia. This approach aims to bypass the costly conversion of green ammonia back to hydrogen, making it more economical and efficient.

The move is in line with the company’s broader sustainable strategies, wherein it aims to 

• Decarbonize its oil refinery in the UK with an investment of USD 3.6 billion.
• Construct a green steel plant in Saudi Arabia with an investment of USD 4 billion.
• Build an LNG and electric ecosystem for emission-free long-haul heavy trucks.

Essar is also building a retail network to supply LNG (liquefied natural gas ) to trucks. As per the company's official statement, LNG-powered trucks have a range of 1,300-1,400 KM compared to the 150 KM range of electric trucks.
