At the ninth edition of the Choose France summit, held on 1 June 2026 at the Château de Versailles, German renewable energy group ENERTRAG announced a USD 1.28 billion investment program aimed at expanding its energy infrastructure across France before the end of the decade.

A Long-Term Commitment to the French Market

ENERTRAG has been active in France for more than 25 years, and the latest announcement represents a significant escalation of that presence. The company's plan calls for commissioning at least 100 megawatts per year of renewable and battery storage capacity, with a stated target of reaching 1 gigawatt of installed capacity in France by 2030.

Speaking at the summit, Dr. Gunar Hering, CEO of ENERTRAG SE, described France as one of the group's key strategic markets. "Our investment plan demonstrates our long-term industrial and financial commitment, based on over 25 years of experience and dedication," he said.

"ENERTRAG intends to leverage its expertise in driven and predictable renewables systems in order to support the evolution of France's energy system. In this context, renewable electricity will be better integrated into the grid."

Vincent Masureel, Managing Director of ENERTRAG France, framed the investment within a broader shift taking place across the renewable energy sector. "The development of renewable energy is entering a new phase in which our ability to integrate generation intelligently into the power grid has become central," he said.

Masureel pointed to the company's energy hub model as central to addressing what he described as the growing challenges of grid flexibility, adding that ENERTRAG's long presence in France underpins its continued commitment to the country's energy system.

The Energy Hub Model

A defining feature of ENERTRAG's strategy in France is its use of hybrid configurations that combine renewable generation with battery storage and controllability.

The company refers to these as energy hubs. According to ENERTRAG, this architecture is designed to enable optimized management of energy flows, better use of existing grid capacity, and more efficient integration of renewable energy into the power system.

The group has stated that some of its upcoming projects will specifically be built around these hybrid configurations in order to enhance power system flexibility.

Additional hubs based on the same architecture are also described as being in preparation at various locations across France, though the company did not specify further details on those sites at the time of the announcement.

Two Flagship Projects

ENERTRAG identified two projects that illustrate its approach in France, each located in a different region and each combining multiple wind farms with a battery storage facility.

The first is located in the Hauts-de-France region in the north of the country. The project is a 120-megawatt hub that brings together two wind farms alongside a battery storage facility. ENERTRAG has stated this hub is set to become operational in March 2027, making it the nearer-term of the two flagships.

The second project is situated in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in the southwest of France. This hub will reach 110 megawatts and will combine three wind farms with a battery storage facility. ENERTRAG did not provide a specific operational date for the Nouvelle-Aquitaine project at the time of the announcement.

Together, the two projects account for 230 megawatts of capacity and serve as concrete examples of the energy hub approach the company intends to deploy more broadly across French territory.

Choose France as a Platform

The Choose France summit has become a recurring venue for major investment announcements directed at the French economy. The 2026 edition, the ninth in the series, was held at the Château de Versailles.

ENERTRAG's announcement at the event signals the company's intent to position itself prominently within France's energy transition plans and to align its industrial strategy with the country's goals around energy sovereignty.

The USD 1.28 billion figure covers new energy infrastructure to be built between now and 2030. ENERTRAG stated that the investment plan reinforces what it described as a strong territorial footprint and reflects confidence in France's attractiveness for renewable energy projects.
