Fluence Energy B.V., a subsidiary of Fluence Energy, Inc., has energized Ukraine's largest battery-based energy storage project with a total capacity of 200 MW in partnership with DTEK Group, Ukraine's largest private energy company. The project was announced on September 11, 2025, marking a significant milestone for Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
Project Specifications and Scale
The energy storage portfolio consists of six battery energy storage systems with varying capacities ranging from 20 to 50 MW each, all connected to the Ukrainian power grid. Collectively, the systems have the capacity to store 400 MWh of electricity, which is sufficient to power 600,000 Ukrainian homes for two hours. The project utilizes Fluence's Gridstack solution and leverages the company's innovative storage technology.
The storage systems are expected to enhance grid stability and resilience in Ukraine through advanced grid-forming capabilities. The new systems are anticipated to increase the security of electricity supply and reduce the risk of outages and accidents, particularly in the event of a breakdown in dispatchable generation, such as gas turbines.
Accelerated Construction Timeline
The project's construction was completed in only six months, significantly faster than the industry average for projects of such complexity. The accelerated timeline was primarily driven by the urgent need for the project to become operational ahead of the winter season. Construction and commissioning were separated across six sites in Ukraine to ensure readiness for winter operations.
Due to the challenges of war and restricted access to Ukraine, this represents the first project Fluence has commissioned fully remotely. In preparation for remote commissioning, 20 Ukrainian power engineers received advanced training on Fluence's existing project sites in Germany and Finland. The training was designed to enable the engineers to install and commission the battery project without Fluence staff on site.
This advanced training and remote commissioning model played a key role in expediting delivery.
