Deutsche Windtechnik (DWT), a comprehensive service provider for all major wind turbine technologies, has been awarded a new service contract to maintain the Riffgat offshore wind farm in the North Sea, with work set to begin in January 2027. The contract was awarded by EWE (Germany’s largest municipal energy and utility company), the farm's operator, and will run for two years with an option for extension.
A Return to Familiar Territory
Riffgat holds a notable place in German energy history as the country's first commercial North Sea offshore wind farm. Deutsche Windtechnik has a prior service history at the site, making this contract award a return engagement rather than a first-time assignment. The company described the win as "extra rewarding" given its existing familiarity with the park and its turbines.
The wind farm comprises 30 Siemens SWT-3.6-120 turbines, and Deutsche Windtechnik's maintenance teams will be responsible for the full fleet throughout the contract period.
Scope of the Contract
The contract covers a comprehensive package of maintenance and operational support services. According to Deutsche Windtechnik, this includes annual maintenance visits, expert inspections of cranes and access equipment, remote troubleshooting, on-call repair services, and spare parts logistics.
The breadth of the contract reflects a full-service approach to keeping the 30-turbine fleet operational across all conditions, including the more demanding winter months when access to offshore assets can be constrained by weather.

Logistics and Operational Base
Deutsche Windtechnik's maintenance teams will operate primarily out of Borkum, the German island situated in the southeastern corner of the North Sea relatively close to Riffgat. During winter periods, operations will also be supported from the company's service station in Emden, a port city on the German mainland.
When conditions or operational requirements demand it, teams will fly out to the wind farm by helicopter to carry out maintenance or repair work, ensuring that turbine availability is maintained regardless of sea state or access constraints that might otherwise delay vessel-based operations.
Siemens Technology Expertise
Deutsche Windtechnik highlighted its established expertise with Siemens wind turbine technology as a factor in securing the contract. The 30 turbines at Riffgat are Siemens SWT-3.6-120 units, a model that requires specialist knowledge for effective maintenance and optimisation.
The company said that winning the Riffgat contract again is a testament to its offshore expertise and its reputation specifically in relation to Siemens technology.
Having previously serviced the same park, DWT's teams are already familiar with the specific characteristics and maintenance requirements of the turbines on site, which the company cited as an operational advantage.
Focus Areas for the Maintenance Programme
Deutsche Windtechnik stated that its focus throughout the contract will be on reliability, technical optimisation, and coordination with EWE. The combination of planned annual maintenance and reactive on-call repair capability is designed to maximise turbine uptime and address issues quickly when they arise.
Remote troubleshooting is also included within the contract scope, enabling DWT's teams to diagnose and, in some cases, resolve technical issues without requiring a physical visit to the turbines, which can reduce response times and operational costs.
Spare parts logistics form another element of the package, ensuring that the necessary components are available when needed to support both scheduled maintenance and unplanned repairs.
Partnership with EWE
The contract represents a continuing relationship between Deutsche Windtechnik and EWE, the energy company that operates Riffgat. EWE's decision to award the contract to DWT again reflects the service provider's prior performance at the site and its technical capabilities in offshore wind maintenance.
Deutsche Windtechnik said its aim is to deliver on its commitments and continue developing solutions that work for all parties involved in the partnership. The company expressed a readiness to build on the experience and knowledge accumulated during its previous service period at Riffgat.
Significance for Deutsche Windtechnik's Offshore Portfolio
Securing a renewed presence at Germany's first commercial North Sea offshore wind farm carries both practical and reputational significance for Deutsche Windtechnik.
The Riffgat contract adds to the company's portfolio of offshore maintenance work and reinforces its positioning in the specialist market for servicing offshore wind assets operated with Siemens turbine technology.
The two-year term, with an option for further extension, provides a medium-term revenue base and the potential for an ongoing relationship with EWE at the site.
Deutsche Windtechnik's dual operational base across Borkum and Emden also demonstrates the logistical infrastructure the company has established to support North Sea offshore operations year-round.
