Octopus Energy and Ming Yang Smart Energy have signed a partnership aimed at reducing wind energy costs and delivering cheaper bills for British households. The collaboration, announced on September 11, 2025, builds on the first Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) in seven years and focuses on dramatically reducing the cost of wind energy in the UK to make renewable power more affordable.

Technology Integration and Software Development

Under the partnership agreement, Octopus will explore implementing software to create the highest levels of data protection and cybersecurity in combination with Ming Yang's cutting-edge offshore and onshore wind turbines. The collaboration aims to provide Octopus software to control Ming Yang's world-class hardware, combining Octopus's expertise in smart technology and software with Ming Yang's wind turbine technology to optimize every kilowatt and cut energy costs for millions of bill payers.

Project Development Through Winder Platform

Octopus Energy Generation, the renewables arm of Octopus Energy, plans to deploy Ming Yang's wind turbines to unleash the development of up to 6 GW of local energy capacity identified through Octopus's match-making platform called 'Winder'. The Winder platform is designed to speed up the development of onshore wind farms by connecting wind-enthusiastic communities with landowners to locate suitable sites for turbines, delivering energy where it's needed most while easing stress on the grid.

Since its launch in 2022, Winder has found enough potential locations to power nearly 5 million homes with clean, homegrown energy. The platform represents a key component in accelerating renewable energy development across the UK.

Octopus is already one of Europe's largest investors in wind energy, managing nearly 5 GW of renewable energy globally, including 1.5 GW in onshore and offshore wind projects. These projects generate enough green power for 2.4 million homes every year, equivalent to taking over 1 million petrol cars off the road.
