Chinese automotive company BYD has started building a new sodium-ion battery facility in Xuzhou with an investment of nearly USD 1.4 billion. The new facility will have a projected annual capacity of 30 GWh.
The sodium-ion batteries produced at the facility will be used for electric vehicles (EVs), particularly microvehicles and scooters. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 4th in the Xuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone.
The facility is part of BYD’s plans to diversify its energy storage solutions. In Shenzen last November, BYD and Huaihai Group signed an agreement to build the Xuzhou sodium battery plant.
The partnership is expected to transform Xuzhou into a battery production hub and will capitalise on the suitability of sodium-ion batteries for smaller EVs. BYD's initiative is a major boost for the sodium-ion battery industry and could pave the way for wider adoption of this technology.
