Global energy storage owner-operator BW ESS has acquired two utility-scale standalone battery energy storage system projects in Spain's Valencia region from independent renewable energy and storage developer Navacant, in a deal that brings a combined capacity of 126 MW and up to 675 MWh into the company's growing Spanish portfolio.

The Projects

The two projects carry individual capacities of 99 MW and 27 MW respectively and have been in development for approximately 18 months. Both are expected to reach Ready-to-Build status in 2027, with commercial operations targeted for 2028. BW ESS has stated its intention to own and operate the assets over the long term.

The acquisition represents an expansion of BW ESS's presence in the Spanish energy storage market, where the company has been active since 2025. The company cited the scale and grid-connection capacity of the projects as key factors in their strategic fit, pointing specifically to what it described as their large-scale and symmetric grid access rights.

Partnership Structure and Development Path

Under the terms of the partnership arrangement, CST Energy, identified as one of Navacant's partners, will continue to lead the projects through the remaining development phase until they reach Ready-to-Build status. BW ESS will then assume the lead role in taking the assets through construction and into their operational phase.

This division of responsibilities reflects a structure in which Navacant's development expertise and local market knowledge are retained during the pre-construction period, before BW ESS takes over to manage delivery and ultimately long-term operations.

The arrangement is framed by both parties as a continuation of the existing project team's involvement rather than a clean handover at the point of acquisition.

"Our continued involvement through the development phase ensures project delivery meets the high standards BW ESS expects."

Strategic Rationale

BW ESS has positioned the acquisition within a broader growth strategy for Spain that combines greenfield development with the acquisition of projects at an advanced stage of development. Isaac García Moreno, Executive Director at BW ESS, pointed to the characteristics of the Spanish energy system as providing clear demand for the type of assets the company is building.

"The Spanish energy system needs assets that can respond quickly to changing supply and demand, support the integration of variable power and strengthen operational resilience," García Moreno said.

García Moreno also emphasised the importance of developer partnerships to the company's Spain strategy. "We are targeting significant growth in our Spanish energy storage platform through a combination of greenfield development and acquisitions of high-quality projects at an advanced stage," he said.

Navacant's track record and the project fundamentals, including their large-scale and symmetric grid access rights, align with our strategy of building a diversified, high-performing storage portfolio."

BW ESS's Wider Portfolio

BW ESS is part of BW Group and operates across six countries: the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Sweden. The company currently has more than 540 MWh of operating battery energy storage systems, approximately 11 GWh under construction, and a development pipeline it describes as running into several gigawatts.

The Valencia acquisition adds to this pipeline at a stage the company characterises as advanced, given the projects' 18 months of prior development and their defined pathway to a Ready-to-Build milestone within the next two years.
