Brookfield Asset Management plans to spend up to USD 9.9 billion on an AI data center in Strängnäs, Sweden. The investment will more than double a planned 300MW facility to 750MW, with the company planning to purchase 350,000 sqm of additional land in Strängnäs to support the larger data center. Brookfield expects the data center to reach full capacity in 10-15 years.

Investment Details

The company's head of Europe, Sikander Rashid, stated that the investment is part of their efforts to support Sweden's ambitions to become a leading AI hub in Europe. Rashid emphasized the importance of investing at scale in the infrastructure underpinning AI technology, including data centers, data transfer, chip storage, and energy generation.

AI Development in Europe

The AI boom has led to a number of large-scale data center investments across Europe. Recently, Nvidia announced a partnership with the Swedish Business Consortium to build Sweden's largest enterprise AI supercomputer. Additionally, Brookfield plans to spend USD 23 billion on AI infrastructure in France over the next five years, with its data center business, Data4, plans to deploy 500MW by another 1GW in the country.

The Swedish Business Consortium includes members such as AstraZeneca, Ericsson, Saab, SEB, and Wallenberg Investments. While the site of the Nvidia-partnered facility has not been disclosed, Brookfield's investment in Strängnäs marks another significant step in boosting sovereign compute capabilities for both public services and private enterprises in Europe.
