Mastercard is planning to build three new data centers in France as part of an EUR 250 million (USD 289.81 million) investment to strengthen its European technology infrastructure. The payment card services company announced the expansion on October 23, 2025, as part of its strategy to increase operational resilience and reduce vulnerability.

Strategic Infrastructure Expansion

The new French data centers will build upon Mastercard's existing European footprint of more than a dozen data centers already operating across the region. According to Kelly Devine, Mastercard's president of Europe, the investment represents a transformation of the company's technology footprint to enable localization of payments infrastructure. “That's why we're transforming our technology footprint, enabling the localization of our payments infrastructure to create a sustainable, distributed network that can run anywhere.

This means always-on infrastructure and reduced vulnerability and greater resilience to natural or geopolitical events,” Devine stated in the company announcement.

Current Global Operations

Mastercard operates approximately 60 data centers globally as of late 2024, according to statements from George Maddeloni, the company's Chief Technology Officer of operations. While the company maintains more than a dozen facilities across Europe, the specific locations of these data centers have not been disclosed. The majority of Mastercard's data center operations are housed in colocation facilities rather than company-owned buildings, with facilities distributed across every region where the company processes customer transactions. At least one confirmed location operates in St. Louis, Missouri.

Network Infrastructure and Technology

The company operates a backbone network utilizing multiple 100-gigabit transport links running on multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) technology. This network infrastructure supports Mastercard's global payment processing operations across all customer regions. In addition to its physical data center footprint, Mastercard utilizes cloud services from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure for internal application deployments, complementing its dedicated infrastructure investments.

Competitive Landscape

The French expansion comes as competitors in the payment processing industry also increase their data center investments. Visa, Mastercard's primary competitor, launched a new data center in Johannesburg, South Africa, earlier in 2025 and announced plans for an additional facility in Nigeria. Details regarding the exact locations of the three planned French data centers, construction timelines, or whether Mastercard intends to build proprietary facilities or lease space in existing colocation centers have not been disclosed.

The company has been contacted for additional information regarding these specifics. The investment represents Mastercard's commitment to maintaining a distributed infrastructure that can operate continuously while protecting payment processing operations across Europe against natural disasters and geopolitical disruptions.
