Bondada Group has been awarded a 400 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) project by the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL), marking a significant advancement in the state’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The project involves the development of standalone, grid-scale BESS facilities at two sites—Vellalaviduthi and Thennampatty—in Tamil Nadu. Designed to enhance grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy sources, the system is expected to help manage peak electricity demand and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The project will be implemented under a build-own-operate (BOO) model. Bondada Group secured the contract through a competitive bidding process led by TNGECL.
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) will procure energy storage services from Bondada through a 12-year Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement. According to project specifications, the system will support two full charge and discharge cycles daily, helping to mitigate the variability of solar and wind power generation.
Strengthening Grid Resilience
The 400 MWh capacity is aimed at supporting the state’s broader push toward clean energy while ensuring uninterrupted power supply. By storing excess energy generated during off-peak hours and releasing it during peak demand, the BESS units are expected to play a key role in balancing Tamil Nadu’s electricity grid.
The initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to integrating renewable sources and improving energy reliability, particularly as Tamil Nadu continues to scale up its solar and wind capacity.
Sustainable Power for the Future
Bondada Group’s involvement in the project reflects a growing emphasis on advanced storage technologies as part of India’s energy transition. Once operational, the BESS installations are anticipated to provide consistent and flexible power, contributing to the state’s long-term sustainability goals.
The timeline for commissioning and further implementation details are expected to be announced as the project progresses.
