Badenova Builds Southern Germany's First Hydrogen Pipeline
The Badenova Group, through its subsidiary badenovaNETZE, has begun constructing a hydrogen pipeline on the Upper Rhine, marking one of the first companies to actively participate in the development of the national hydrogen core network. This project aims to advance the company's infrastructure and contribute to the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy in Germany. The pipeline, approximately 58 km long, will be built between Grenzach-Wyhlen and Waldshut-Tiengen, primarily supplying energy-intensive industries along the Upper Rhine with green hydrogen.
Project Details
The construction of the pipeline started in March 2025, with the first section, approximately 9 km long, being laid between the municipalities of Albbruck and Dogern. By the end of April, about 350 m of pipeline had been successfully laid. The entire project is scheduled to be commissioned by 2030. badenovaNETZE is taking an active role in the development of the hydrogen core network, positioning itself alongside long-distance network operators.
Regional Impact
The project's progress is the result of close coordination with regional stakeholders, including the Waldshut district and the municipalities of Albbruck and Dogern. District Administrator Dr. Martin Kistler emphasized the strategic importance of the project, stating it gives energy-intensive companies a clear future perspective and demonstrates that cross-border efforts have paid off.
Partnerships and Future Plans
Badenova is involved in a joint hydrogen initiative on the Upper Rhine with industrial companies such as Evonik, RWE, and Bosch. The company sees itself as an active partner in developing a functioning hydrogen market, contributing expertise, existing infrastructure, and a broad partner network to the transformation.
With the construction of the hydrogen network, badenova is implementing one of the largest investment steps in the company's history, demonstrating its commitment to shaping the energy future of its region. The construction marks a significant step towards a sustainable energy supply in the region.
