Aula Energy Breaks Ground on 256 MW Carmody's Hill Wind Farm Near Georgetown in South Australia

Project Scale and Energy Output

The Carmody's Hill Wind Farm will generate up to 256.2 megawatts of clean energy upon completion, enough to power more than 195,000 South Australian homes.

 

The project will consist of 42 wind turbines along with a suite of supporting infrastructure, including underground medium-voltage cabling, operations and maintenance facilities, and a dedicated project substation.

The facility will also require 12.8 kilometres of 275 kilovolt transmission line to connect into the existing network, specifically the Davenport to Brinkworth 275kV line. Construction is expected to take approximately two years, with the wind farm scheduled to become operational in late 2028.

 

Jobs and Local Economic Impact

The project is expected to support up to 200 jobs and engage local contractors during the construction phase, with ongoing local employment anticipated once the facility is operational.

 

Aula Energy has indicated it will support local initiatives through a community benefit fund, which the company says will reflect community priorities and deliver lasting value to the region.

Engagement with Traditional Owners and Community

The groundbreaking ceremony was opened with a Welcome to Country led by the Nukunu People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which the wind farm is being developed.

 

Their participation in the ceremony was described by Aula Energy as part of an ongoing partnership that has shaped the project's development throughout each phase.

Hymas acknowledged the Nukunu People's contribution directly, saying the company was honoured to begin the event with the Welcome to Country and expressing gratitude for their continued involvement. The ceremony also brought together local landholders and community members who have been engaged throughout the planning and approvals process.

"Throughout each phase of the project we have worked closely with local landholders, Traditional Owners, community members and the local government to ensure their feedback has helped shape the project's development," Hymas said.

Infrastructure Details

Beyond the 42 wind turbines, the completed wind farm will incorporate a range of infrastructure components designed to support long-term operations. Underground medium-voltage cabling will connect the turbines across the site, while a project substation will manage electricity output before it feeds into the high-voltage transmission network.

 

The 12.8-kilometre, 275kV transmission line will provide the critical link between the site and the existing Davenport to Brinkworth line, integrating Carmody's Hill into South Australia's broader electricity grid.

Operations and maintenance facilities will also be constructed as part of the project, supporting the workforce required to manage the wind farm once it enters commercial operation in late 2028.
