The joint venture between Salt River Project (SRP) and NextEra Energy Resources has commissioned Arizona’s largest operational battery energy storage system. Sonoran Solar Energy Center is a 260 MW solar facility with the ability to charge a 1 GWh battery energy storage system, located south of Buckeye, Arizona.

The solar and battery storage systems are supplying the grid with clean energy and will help Google's upcoming data center campus in Mesa, Arizona, match its electricity needs. Energy not needed by the data center will be used to meet other SRP customer needs.

In addition to the Sonoran Solar Energy Center, the newly developed Storey Energy Center, an 88-MW solar and battery storage system located in Coolidge, Arizona, will also support Google. Both facilities operated by NextEra Energy Resources subsidiaries can supply nearly 80,000 average-sized homes with energy. They can also store clean energy for up to four hours to support the power grid during periods of high power demand.

These projects are part of Google's ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions across its operations and value chain by 2030. Google aims to operate its data centers and office campuses on 24/7 carbon-free energy. The Sonoran, Storey, and Babbitt Ranch projects contribute to these commitments by supporting the energy needs of Google's future data center in Mesa.

SRP is taking significant, industry-leading steps to decarbonize its power generation portfolio while serving one of the fastest-growing service territories in the country. Through its Integrated System Plan, SRP found it will need to at least double the number of power resources on its power system in the next 10 years. This is necessary to meet the growing energy demand in the Phoenix metropolitan area as SRP completes the planned retirement of 2,600 MW of coal resources.

Objectives of the Project

Supporting Google's Energy Needs: The primary objective of the project is to support Google's forthcoming data center campus in Mesa, Arizona.

Promoting Clean Energy: The project aims to add clean energy to the grid. The solar and battery storage systems will generate enough energy to power nearly 80,000 average-sized homes when the sun is shining. It can also store clean energy for up to four hours to support the power grid during periods of high power demand.

Decarbonizing Power Generation: The project is part of SRP's significant steps to decarbonize its power generation portfolio while serving one of the fastest-growing service territories in the country.
