Arevon Energy has brought its Nighthawk Energy Storage Project in Poway, California, online, marking the completion of the company's largest standalone battery storage facility to date.

The 300 megawatt, 1,200 megawatt-hour project is now operational and is described as among the most significant energy storage facilities in the San Diego region.

Project Scale and Technology

The Nighthawk project uses lithium iron phosphate battery technology, a chemistry recognized for its strong safety record and long operational lifespan. The facility is designed to store electricity during periods of lower demand and dispatch it when consumption peaks, giving it the capacity to power up to 385,000 homes for as long as four hours during peak demand periods.

At 300 megawatts and 1,200 megawatt-hours, Nighthawk represents the largest standalone battery storage project in Arevon's portfolio. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based company developed, constructed, owns, and operates the facility entirely, making Nighthawk a vertically integrated project from inception through ongoing operations.

Long-Term Agreement and Grid Reliability

The Nighthawk project operates under a long-term agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Despite being located in the San Diego region, this arrangement is intended to help PG&E advance California's reliability and clean energy goals, reflecting the statewide nature of grid management across the California market.

The California Public Utilities Commission played a role in shaping the conditions that led to the project's development. Leuwam Tesfai, Executive Director at the CPUC, noted at the ribbon-cutting ceremony that the commission's integrated resource planning and mid-term reliability procurement programs identified the need for new energy storage capacity as the grid continues to evolve. Tesfai described Nighthawk as an example of that planning process becoming operational reality.

Economic Impact and Tax Revenue

Arevon projects that the Nighthawk facility will generate more than USD 30 million in property tax revenue over its lifetime. That revenue is expected to fund local schools, public safety operations, infrastructure improvements, and other essential community services in the Poway area.

During the peak construction phase, the project employed more than 130 workers and generated economic activity for local businesses and the surrounding community.

San Diego County District 2 Supervisor Joel Anderson, who spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, cited the project's contribution to local infrastructure and economic development alongside its grid reliability benefits.

Chris Cate, President and Chief Executive Officer at the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, also offered remarks at the ceremony, stating that reliable energy infrastructure supports the region's ability to attract employers and maintain its competitiveness.

Cate characterized Arevon's investment in Poway as representative of the kind of partnership between infrastructure, business, and community that the chamber supports.

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Officials Present

Arevon marked the project's completion with an on-site ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by project partners, local officials, business leaders, and community members.

Justin Johnson, Chief Executive Officer at Arevon, offered remarks alongside Tesfai from the CPUC, Supervisor Anderson, Cate from the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, Mike Leland, Chief Executive Officer at the Poway Chamber of Commerce, and Tony Rubino, President at the North County Special Needs Community Foundation. Sohail Suryavanshi, Senior Manager of Development at Arevon, served as master of ceremonies.

Johnson emphasized the growing importance of energy storage as electricity demand rises across California and the broader United States, describing projects of Nighthawk's scale as critical to meeting the country's expanding energy needs while delivering lasting economic benefits to local communities.

Leland, representing the Poway Chamber of Commerce, said that Arevon had taken the time to understand the local community and support organizations and initiatives important to residents, adding that the chamber looks forward to continuing that partnership.

Community Partnerships and Local Engagement

Beyond the direct economic contributions of the project, Arevon has established partnerships with a range of organizations throughout Poway and the greater San Diego area. These partnerships span youth programs, first responder support, special needs adult services, climate education, and local nonprofits.

Among the organizations Arevon has partnered with are the North County Special Needs Community Foundation, the Kiwanis Club of Poway and The Ranches, the Rancho Family YMCA, and the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of San Diego County.

Rubino of the North County Special Needs Community Foundation described the initial outreach from Arevon as enthusiastic and indicated that the company's engagement with programs supporting the special needs community in the Poway area was evident early in their discussions.
