HiTHIUM Signs Deal to Supply 421 MWh Battery Storage System for GPG's Fraser Coast Project in Australia

HiTHIUM, a global energy storage technology company, has signed a Battery Energy Storage System supply agreement with Global Power Generation, the international renewable energy arm of Spain's NATURGY Group, to deliver a 421 MWh battery energy storage system for a project on Australia's Fraser Coast in Queensland.

The agreement was announced on August 12, 2026, and represents the first utility-scale collaboration between HiTHIUM and GPG, with both parties describing it as a foundation for future cooperation in Australia's expanding battery storage market.

Scope of Supply and Delivery Model

Under the terms of the agreement, HiTHIUM will supply 84 liquid-cooled battery energy storage system units to the Fraser Coast project. The company's responsibilities extend well beyond hardware delivery and encompass a comprehensive suite of services including system design, manufacturing, factory acceptance testing, DDP delivery, commissioning, technical support, and training.

HiTHIUM describes its approach as an integrated, end-to-end delivery model covering the entire project lifecycle from engineering and system integration through to commissioning and long-term technical support.

 

The company draws on what it describes as extensive experience in delivering large-scale energy storage deployments worldwide, positioning itself as a full-service partner for utility-scale projects rather than solely a hardware supplier.

 

Technical Configuration and Grid Services

The Fraser Coast BESS is structured as an AC-coupled energy storage project, connected to the 33kV switchgear of an adjacent solar farm. This configuration allows the system to charge from two distinct sources: the co-located solar plant and the broader electricity grid.

The system is designed with grid-forming capabilities and will deliver two primary grid services. The first is energy arbitrage, which involves charging when electricity prices or supply conditions are favorable and discharging at other times.

 

The second is Frequency Control Ancillary Services, known as FCAS, which are used to regulate frequency on the electricity grid and support overall grid stability.

These two functions together are intended to improve operational flexibility for grid operators and to support higher levels of renewable energy penetration on the grid to which the system is connected.

GPG and NATURGY Group

Global Power Generation, the project developer behind the Fraser Coast BESS, is the international renewable energy generation company of NATURGY Group. The Fraser Coast agreement marks the first utility-scale project on which GPG and HiTHIUM have collaborated, according to the announcement.

 

Both companies indicated the deal is intended to lay groundwork for ongoing cooperation as Australia's battery storage sector grows alongside broader renewable energy deployment.
