Alter Enersun has closed a financing deal worth more than USD 68.9 million with three of Spain's largest banks to add battery storage capacity to a portfolio of solar assets in the region of Extremadura, marking a significant step in the company's strategy to transition its generation facilities into hybrid installations.
The Financing Agreement
The Spanish renewable energy company Alter Enersun has reached a financing agreement exceeding USD 68.9 million with CaixaBank, Banco Santander, and BBVA.
The operation, which has been reported across several media outlets, involves all three banks acting together to provide the capital required for the planned battery storage integration. According to the company, the deal reflects confidence in the quality of its assets, its execution capabilities and its long-term growth strategy.
What the Funds Will Finance
The financing will be used to incorporate 135 MWh of battery storage capacity across five of Alter Enersun's photovoltaic assets located in Extremadura. Those five plants have a combined installed capacity of 90 megawatts peak.
The project represents what the company describes as hybridisation, a process of integrating energy storage directly with existing renewable generation assets to create installations capable of both producing and storing electricity.
The addition of battery systems will allow the plants to retain a portion of the electricity generated during peak solar production hours and make that energy available to the grid at other times, when demand may be higher or solar irradiation lower. Alter Enersun states that this approach optimises the use of renewable output and contributes greater flexibility to the electrical system overall.

Strategic Context for Alter Enersun
The transaction fits within a broader strategic direction that Alter Enersun has been pursuing to evolve its asset base beyond straightforward solar generation toward integrated hybrid systems that combine renewable generation with energy storage. The company has framed the financing as a further advance in the deployment of that strategy.
Alter Enersun's activity in the storage sector in Extremadura is not new. The company was previously named as the recipient of five of the eleven projects selected in the first call for energy storage aid in Extremadura, a development the company announced approximately ten months ago. The current financing deal appears to build directly on that earlier position, using private bank financing to fund the technical upgrades associated with those storage projects.
Significance of the Battery Storage Component
The 135 MWh of battery storage being financed across the five Extremadura plants represents a substantial addition to the region's grid-connected storage capacity.
By storing energy produced during the hours of greatest solar generation, the hybridised plants will be positioned to dispatch electricity at moments when the grid requires additional supply, rather than being constrained to delivering power only during daylight generation windows.
Alter Enersun has described this capability as providing greater flexibility to the electrical system, a function that is increasingly valued as the share of variable renewable energy on Spain's grid continues to grow.
Photovoltaic generation is by nature intermittent, and the integration of battery storage directly at the plant level is one mechanism being adopted across the industry to address the mismatch between peak generation times and peak demand periods.
The Role of CaixaBank, BBVA and Santander
The involvement of three major Spanish banking institutions in a single renewable energy financing transaction of this scale signals a degree of institutional confidence in the project's financial structure and the underlying assets.
CaixaBank, BBVA and Santander are among the country's largest lenders, and their participation as a banking syndicate provides Alter Enersun with the capital base needed to execute the hybridisation programme across all five plants.
The company has not disclosed the specific terms of the financing, including the tenor of the loans or the interest rate structures agreed with the three banks. Details of the operation have been made available in a full press release published on the Alter Enersun website.
Alter Enersun's Broader Development Pipeline
Beyond the Extremadura battery storage program, Alter Enersun has been active on other fronts. Approximately seven months ago, the company announced that it had obtained administrative authorization for more than 130 megawatts of new photovoltaic capacity at the Port of Huelva. That project, if developed, would represent a separate addition to the company's generation portfolio in southern Spain.
The combination of the Huelva authorization and the Extremadura hybridization financing indicates a company operating across both new-build solar development and the upgrading of existing operational assets, pursuing growth on two parallel tracks within the Spanish renewable energy market.
