The African Development Bank has selected four green hydrogen projects in Egypt, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa to receive a combined USD 20 million in repayable support. The funding is subject to formal approval from the African Development Bank's Board of Directors.

Four Countries, USD 23 Billion in Planned Investment

The four selected projects represent approximately USD 23 billion in planned investments across the continent. According to the AfDB, the projects are expected to collectively deliver the equivalent of 20 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity, 7 gigawatts of electrolyzers, and 2,950 megawatt-hours of battery storage.

The scale of the undertaking reflects the ambitions of the Africa Green Hydrogen Programme, under which the call for proposals was issued.

The funding will be drawn from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa, a special fund managed by the AfDB dedicated to supporting investments in clean energy. The USD 20 million announced is structured as repayable support rather than a grant, distinguishing this mechanism from conventional development aid.

Project-by-Project Breakdown

Each of the four selected projects has been allocated a distinct portion of the available funding. In Egypt, the Ra project, led by DAI Infrastruktur, has been selected for USD 3.55 million.

In Morocco, the Guelmim Green Hydrogen Valley, sponsored by Nareva Holding, is set to receive USD 5.28 million. In Namibia, Hyphen Hydrogen Energy has been chosen to receive USD 5.93 million, the largest individual allocation among the four.

In South Africa, the Saldanha Hydrogen DRI project, developed by Enertrag in partnership with ArcelorMittal South Africa, is associated with USD 5.24 million in support.

Industrial Applications Vary by Country

The projects are oriented toward different end-use industries depending on their location. The proposals from Egypt, Morocco, and Namibia are focused on producing sustainable fuels for maritime transport and aviation sectors.

The South African project at Saldanha takes a different industrial direction, targeting low-carbon iron production through a process known as direct reduced iron, or DRI.

The involvement of ArcelorMittal South Africa as a project partner underscores the steel industry's growing interest in hydrogen-based decarbonization pathways.

Competitive Selection Process Drew Broad Interest

The Africa Green Hydrogen Programme has attracted project proposals from developers across the African continent, covering a broad geographic and sectoral range. The program supports the development of green hydrogen projects that can utilize Africa's renewable energy resources to produce clean fuels and related products.

The selected projects form part of a wider pipeline of green hydrogen developments across Africa, with several countries positioned to develop renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure for domestic use and international markets.
