Advantage Renewables (renewable energy company) has announced the acquisition of a portfolio of three transmission-level battery energy storage system projects in Michigan from 5 Rivers Energy (renewable energy company) , marking a further extension of the solar and storage developer's footprint in the Midwest.

Details of the Transaction

The deal, announced on August 4, 2026, involves a portfolio of early-stage battery energy storage system projects, referred to as BESS, that are currently in the early stages of development.

Advantage Renewables, headquartered and active across the United States, said it plans to advance the three projects through development, permitting and interconnection processes. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The seller, 5 Rivers Energy, describes itself as a global clean energy and infrastructure development company with interests spanning renewable energy, infrastructure supply and emerging technologies. The company operates across North America, the Caribbean and the Middle East.

Strategic Rationale for Advantage Renewables

Advantage Renewables already holds an established Midwest presence through utility-scale solar and energy storage projects operating within the MISO North territory, which encompasses portions of the upper Midwest. The company said the newly acquired Michigan portfolio builds directly on that regional base.

Steven Lichtin, CEO of Advantage Renewables, framed the acquisition as a deliberate step in the company's broader storage strategy. "Energy storage is essential to building a more flexible and resilient grid," Lichtin said.

"These projects represent a meaningful step in our strategy to expand our storage portfolio in key markets like Michigan, where demand for reliable, clean energy solutions continues to grow."

According to the company, once developed, the three projects are expected to support energy reliability, help integrate intermittent renewable resources onto the grid and assist in managing peak demand across Michigan.

Michigan's Energy Storage Market

The acquisition comes against the backdrop of Michigan's stated clean energy ambitions. The state has set targets to achieve 100 percent economy-wide carbon neutrality by 2050, a policy direction that has contributed to its emergence as a growing market for battery storage development.

Advantage Renewables said it will work with local governments, community members, utilities and regulatory agencies as it moves the portfolio forward toward commercialization.

Battery energy storage technology has taken on an increasingly central role in modern grid infrastructure, enabling higher levels of renewable energy penetration while maintaining stability across transmission networks.

Transmission-level storage projects, such as those included in this portfolio, are designed to operate at the scale required to support broader grid functions rather than serving individual facilities or smaller distribution networks.

5 Rivers Energy's Perspective on the Sale

Shayan Rashid, CEO of 5 Rivers Energy, said his company was confident in handing the portfolio to Advantage Renewables. "We are pleased to transfer these projects to Advantage Renewables, a group with the capability and vision to bring them to fruition," Rashid said.

"As we continue to grow our pipeline across North America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, we look forward to seeing these assets contribute to Michigan's renewable energy future."

The remarks indicate that 5 Rivers Energy views the divestiture as consistent with its own development strategy, which involves originating and advancing projects before transferring them to developers with the operational scale to bring them through to completion. The company described its broader focus as advancing high-quality energy and infrastructure projects in support of the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Development Path Ahead

Advantage Renewables did not provide a timeline for when the three projects might reach commercial operation. The company noted that the portfolio is currently at an early stage, meaning significant work remains across permitting, interconnection studies, and other development milestones before any of the projects could begin construction or enter service.

The company said it intends to apply its existing expertise in energy storage and energy infrastructure deployment to move the Michigan projects forward. Advantage Renewables describes its broader mission as developing high-quality and responsibly sited solar and energy storage projects across the United States to deliver clean energy in the communities where it operates.
