ADNOC has taken a final investment decision on the Ruwais Diyab Unconventional Gas Development in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), a move the company says advances its integrated global gas growth strategy and opens a new source of reliable energy for domestic and international markets. The announcement was made at ADIPEC on November 2, 2026.

Project Scope and Timeline

The Ruwais Diyab development will deliver 345 million standard cubic feet per day of raw gas from 2029, over a 25-year period. According to ADNOC, the project has the potential to reach up to 1 billion standard cubic feet per day in the future.

Gas from the development will be processed on site and connected to the UAE's gas network through new pipeline infrastructure. ADNOC said this will strengthen domestic supply and support the nation's economic and industrial growth, as well as the company's liquefied natural gas export ambitions.

A First for ADNOC

The company describes Ruwais Diyab as its first large-scale unconventional gas development. His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, said the final investment decision marks an important milestone in unlocking Abu Dhabi's vast gas resources.

"This investment will strengthen the UAE's energy security, support industrial growth and advance ADNOC's integrated global gas growth strategy to responsibly meet rising demand at home and abroad," Al Jaber said.

ADNOC said the development advances its ambition to establish a scalable unconventional gas business and create a platform for future growth.

The UAE's Gas Resource Base

ADNOC noted that the UAE holds the seventh-largest gas reserves in the world. These comprise 298 trillion standard cubic feet of conventional gas reserves and 160 trillion standard cubic feet of unconventional gas resources.

The company said that as global demand for reliable, lower-carbon energy continues to grow, it is unlocking more of the nation's gas resources and expanding its LNG portfolio. The stated aim is to meet the needs of its customers and to power industrial and artificial intelligence infrastructure growth.

Strengthening the Gas Value Chain

ADNOC said the additional unconventional gas supply from Ruwais Diyab will strengthen its gas value chain, including the ability of ADNOC Gas to meet rising domestic and international customer demand.

Delivery Model and Technology

The development follows what ADNOC described as a disciplined program of technical studies, field testing and subsurface analysis. This work was delivered by ADNOC Onshore under a design-build-operate model, which the company said is intended to reduce development risk.

ADNOC said the project brings together advanced subsurface expertise, AI-enabled drilling and completion technologies, and integrated project delivery capabilities. These are intended to support the efficient and responsible development of domestic gas resources.

Strategic Context

The decision comes as ADNOC pursues what it calls an integrated global gas growth strategy, combining expanded domestic supply with a broader LNG portfolio.

By bringing unconventional resources into production, the company is drawing on the 160 trillion standard cubic feet of unconventional gas resources the UAE holds, alongside its conventional reserves.

The announcement did not disclose the investment value of the project or provide further detail on the new pipeline infrastructure beyond its role in connecting processed gas to the UAE's gas network.

From Field Plans to Fuel: Track the UAE's Oil & Gas Pipeline Before Your Competitors Do

Every multibillion-dollar refinery, LNG terminal, and offshore development in the UAE begins the same way: as a project announcement, a tender, or a contract award that most industry players never see coming until it's too late to act on it.

What separates winning contractors, suppliers, and investors from the rest isn't luck; it's timing. Access to verified project intelligence at the earliest stages is what turns a passive observer into an active bidder.

The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research delivers that advantage, with a continuously updated database of oil and gas projects across the UAE, from initial concept to commissioning.
