Accelera is partnering with Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH, a leading European hydrogen specialist, to deploy a 5-megawatt (MW) proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system at the Port of Schweinfurt in Bavaria, Germany. The system will be powered by renewable solar and wind energy, generating up to 2.2 tons of green hydrogen daily to support decarbonization across the mobility, industrial, and research sectors in central Germany.

Technology and Production Capacity

The electrolyzer system will utilize two Accelera HyLYZER 500 electrolyzers to deliver 5MW of capacity. The system is designed to produce up to 2.2 tons of green hydrogen daily for mobility, industrial, and research & development (R&D) applications. The electrolyzers will utilize electricity from solar and wind sources to produce zero-emissions hydrogen. Accelera is a leader in large-scale hydrogen production using PEM electrolysis and has deployed more than 600 electrolyzer units worldwide, powering some of the most advanced PEM electrolyzer systems operating globally. This includes a 20MW facility in Quebec, Canada, and a 35MW system in New York, U.S.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure

The electrolyzer system will be installed at the Port of Schweinfurt, a central logistics hub in Bavaria with direct access to major highways, industrial infrastructure, and the SüdLink DC grid connection. This location provides reliable access to renewable energy sources for the hydrogen production facility. The port's strategic location in Bavaria provides connectivity to transportation networks and industrial infrastructure, supporting the distribution and utilization of green hydrogen produced by the facility.

Environmental Impact and Government Support

The project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 6,000 tons annually compared to fossil fuel alternatives. This reduction is equivalent to removing approximately 1,400 passenger vehicles from the road. The project is supported by an EUR 5 million grant from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, provided through their Electrolyzer Funding Program. This government support underscores a strong commitment by the government to hydrogen infrastructure and clean energy innovation in the region.

Industry Partnership and Strategic Vision

Des McMenamin, General Manager of Electrolyzers for Accelera, stated that “This collaboration with Tyczka Hydrogen underscores our commitment to advancing the hydrogen economy across Europe. By deploying our proven HyLYZER technology at this strategic location in Bavaria, we're helping to facilitate the development of a regional hydrogen value chain, from production to end-use, and accelerating the transition to zero-emissions transportation and industry.”

Jürgen Schmidt, Head of Technology & Engineering at Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH, emphasized the importance of the electrolyzer to their operations. “The electrolyzer is an important part of our production plant. The performance of this unit is key to our success at our hydrogen hub in Bavaria. We are confident that with Accelera, we have found an experienced partner to achieve a high level of safety, quality, availability, and efficiency,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt also highlighted how the new facility will integrate with Tyczka Hydrogen's existing infrastructure: “Together with our strong trailer-fleet and the extensive network of green hydrogen sources, this new hub will significantly complement our already strong value chain.” The partnership represents a significant development in the European hydrogen economy, leveraging renewable energy sources to produce green hydrogen that is vital for accelerating the clean energy transition.

The facility will serve multiple sectors, including mobility, industrial applications, and research and development activities in central Germany.
