Montreal-based specialty semiconductor producer 5N Plus Inc. has announced plans to expand its production facility in St. George, Utah by approximately 50%, targeting growth across defense, space solar, medical imaging and industrial sensing applications.

The company said construction is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and reach completion by the second half of 2027.

Scope of the Expansion

The project will add manufacturing and product-development space to the existing St. George site, improve workflows, and install new equipment. 5N+ said the additional capacity is intended to allow the company to progressively grow its team of engineers and materials scientists.

To minimize delays, the company's engineers, technicians, and third-party equipment manufacturers will assemble critical equipment offsite while construction is underway, with the aim of accelerating installation once the building work is finished.

The company described the expansion as a capital-efficient and scalable platform that can grow in step with customer demand. Funding for the project, including the gradual installation of new equipment, will come from the company's existing capital expenditure plans and from customer support.

What the St. George Facility Does

5N+ has wholly owned the St. George facility since 2014. The site transforms germanium, indium antimonide, gallium arsenide, cadmium telluride, and cadmium zinc telluride into high-value semiconductor materials, wafers, substrates, and selected components. End uses span a wide range of demanding applications, including infrared optics, defense electro-optical systems, space solar power, and medical CT scanners.

The facility's integrated capabilities include material recovery, refining and purification, as well as semiconductor crystal growth, precision cutting and polishing, and specialized product and process development. The company said this breadth of integrated capability supports long-term customer relationships in markets with demanding qualification and performance requirements.

In addition to serving established customer applications, the St. George team works with customers and partners to develop and qualify new materials and products for emerging and next-generation uses.

Strategic Rationale and Government Links

5N+ said the expansion follows two recently announced U.S. government awards supporting capabilities being developed at the St. George site, as well as partnerships with U.S. defense customers. The company did not identify the specific awards or customers by name in its announcement.

Richard Perron, President and Chief Executive Officer of 5N+, said the St. George team had solidified its position as a trusted partner in strategic U.S. and global supply chains over the past several years. He cited the customer relationships built across government and industry, combined with investments in talent and technology, as factors that have positioned the site for further growth, including within the U.S. defense industrial base.

"Expanding our existing St. George facility will create a capital-efficient and scalable platform to increase our capacity in step with customer demand, leveraging the site's established operations, experienced team, and technical expertise," Perron said. "Our project execution plan will also accelerate time to market for customer-backed opportunities, while having an expanded facility will provide flexibility to support additional growth over time across our core end markets."

The company also stated that the expansion will contribute to strengthening the resilience of strategic North American critical mineral transformation supply chains, a priority that has gained increasing attention from both governments and industry as geopolitical pressures mount around access to advanced materials.

5N+ and the Critical Minerals Landscape

5N Plus trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker VNP and describes itself as a leading global producer of specialty semiconductors and performance materials. The company is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, and operates research and development, manufacturing, and commercial centers across North America, Europe, and Asia.

The St. George facility sits at the intersection of several strategically sensitive supply chains. The materials processed there, including germanium and gallium arsenide, are classified as critical minerals by multiple governments due to their importance in defense electronics, satellite technology, and advanced sensing systems.

The facility's ability to carry out the full transformation process, from raw material recovery through to finished semiconductor components, gives it a degree of vertical integration that the company says underpins its relationships with customers in markets that have lengthy qualification cycles and strict performance standards.

The announcement of the Utah expansion reflects a broader pattern in the specialty semiconductor sector, where producers with established U.S.-based manufacturing footprints are investing in additional domestic capacity to meet demand from defense and government customers seeking secure, onshore sources of advanced materials.

5N+ said the expanded St. George facility would provide flexibility to support growth across its core end markets over time, beyond the customer-backed opportunities that are already in view. The company listed renewable energy, security, space, pharmaceuticals, medical imaging, and industrial applications as the key industries its products serve globally.
