Valens Semiconductor has announced a collaboration with onsemi aimed at developing a cost-optimized integrated sensor for high-volume 3-megapixel automotive camera applications, with both companies targeting the MIPI A-PHY standard as the connectivity foundation for the joint offering.
The Collaboration and Its Scope
The agreement, announced on September 22, 2026, calls for Valens to work with onsemi on a cost-optimized A-PHY offering that can be integrated directly into onsemi's image sensors.
The stated aim of the partnership is to give original equipment manufacturers and Tier 1 automotive suppliers a faster path to adopting A-PHY technology. Valens Semiconductor trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol VLN and is headquartered in Hod Hasharon, Israel.
According to both companies, the collaboration brings together complementary areas of expertise, Valens in high-performance connectivity chipsets and onsemi in automotive imaging technologies, with the goal of strengthening the broader A-PHY ecosystem. The parties have framed the integrated sensor as a complement to Valens' existing product lineup, designed to extend A-PHY adoption into a wider range of automotive use cases.
Why 3MP Is the Target
The choice of 3 megapixels as the target resolution for this collaboration reflects where the automotive imaging market currently sits. According to both companies, the majority of automotive image sensors sold today fall within the 1-to-3-megapixel range.
As OEMs continue to migrate toward higher camera resolutions across their vehicle platforms, a 3MP offering addresses what the companies describe as both a large established market and a growing upgrade opportunity.
The companies positioned this resolution tier as a highly relevant entry point for bringing A-PHY into mainstream, high-volume vehicles, rather than limiting the standard's deployment to premium or advanced driver assistance system applications.
The integrated approach is also described as a means to reduce component count and simplify camera architecture, which the companies say makes advanced vision systems easier to deploy for automakers and their supply chains.

Executive Statements
Yoram Salinger, chief executive officer at Valens Semiconductor, described the agreement as a milestone not just for Valens but for the MIPI A-PHY standard and the automotive ecosystem more broadly.
He said the integrated 3MP offering complements Valens' existing solutions and extends A-PHY to a much broader range of use cases than the company's current portfolio addresses.
Salinger also highlighted the supplier diversity angle of the deal, noting that by collaborating with onsemi, another major supplier of A-PHY silicon, the agreement reinforces the kind of multi-supplier ecosystem that automakers expect from an industry standard.
"Just as importantly, by collaborating with onsemi, another major supplier of A-PHY silicon, we are strengthening the ecosystem and giving automakers the supplier choice they expect from an industry standard," Salinger said in the announcement.
Ahmed Salem, Vice President and General Manager of the Intelligent Sensing Group at onsemi, pointed to OEM interest as a driver behind the collaboration. Salem said the level of interest from OEM customers and partners has made clear that MIPI A-PHY represents a significant business opportunity.
He added that as automotive imaging systems grow in scale and sophistication, customers are seeking solutions that simplify design without compromising performance.
The collaboration with Valens, Salem said, is aimed at enabling a more streamlined camera architecture that reduces component count, supports industry standards, and makes advanced vision systems easier to deploy.
MIPI A-PHY's Role in the Automotive Industry
MIPI A-PHY holds the distinction of being the first standard in the automotive industry specifically designed for high-speed sensor connectivity. The standard has attracted growing attention from automakers and suppliers as vehicles incorporate increasing numbers of cameras and sensors to support advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving functions.
Valens has positioned itself as a leader in the A-PHY space since the standard's inception. The company claims to have been first to market with chipsets compliant with the MIPI A-PHY standard and first to achieve design wins with multiple OEMs.
The collaboration with onsemi is presented as a continuation of that market development effort, this time focused on driving adoption at higher volumes and lower price points than premium A-PHY applications have historically targeted.
Broader Context for Valens
Valens Semiconductor describes itself as a provider of high-performance connectivity chipsets whose products are integrated into devices powering audio-video installations, videoconferencing systems, and automotive applications including advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving platforms. The company's technology also forms the basis for the HDBaseT industry standard in addition to MIPI A-PHY.
The announcement did not include financial terms of the collaboration agreement, nor did it specify a timeline for when a commercially available integrated sensor product resulting from the collaboration might reach the market.
