RWE Forms Joint Venture with WhiteRock Renewables for the Expansion of Renewable Energy Projects in USA

RWE has forged a strategic partnership with WhiteRock Renewables to accelerate the expansion of its onshore wind, solar, and other renewable energy projects in the USA. This collaboration with WhiteRock strengthens RWE’s development endeavors in the U.S. WhiteRock is anticipated to develop up to 4 to 5 GW of onshore wind, solar, and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.

Subsequently, RWE will have the option to acquire these projects as they mature and become ready for final investment decisions. Currently, RWE is progressing with the development of 36 GW of onshore wind, solar, and BESS projects in the USA.

Leveraging WhiteRock’s development capabilities, experienced staff, and industry networks, RWE aims to supplement its project development pipeline to achieve its ambitious U.S. growth targets. Hanson Wood, Senior Vice President of Utility-Scale Development for RWE Clean Energy, stated, “RWE is investing billions to expand our U.S. portfolio, which is projected to account for 30% of the company’s global green installed capacity by 2030.”

 

Moreover, RWE continues to expand its presence in the solar and wind power market in the US. The company is utilizing its well-established clean energy business to bolster its renewables portfolio, aiming to increase its net installed capacity from over 9 GW today to more than 19 GW by 2030.

The joint venture between RWE and WhiteRock Renewables aims to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. This partnership is a strategic move to leverage the strengths of both entities in the renewable energy sector. The objectives of this joint venture can be outlined as follows:

 

Expansion of Renewable Energy Projects

The primary objective of the joint venture is to expand renewable energy projects. This includes developing large offshore and onshore wind projects in the US, batteries, flexible generation, and green hydrogen.

 

Investment and Growth

RWE has launched an investment and growth strategy, 'Growing Green', which aims to invest USD 54 billion by 2030.  The U.S. plays a key role in RWE’s Growing Green strategy to significantly expand its global green technology capacity to more than 65 GW by 2030.
