Definition: AC motors are electromechanical devices that convert electrical power in the form of alternating voltage and current into mechanical energy. AC motors are classified into synchronous motors and induction motors (asynchronous motors).
Induction motors can be either single-phase or three-phase, while synchronous motors include reluctance motors and hysteresis motors. AC motors are of low maintenance compared to DC motors as brushes and commutators are absent.
The AC motor generally comprises two essential parts: an outside stator with coils that run an alternating current that produces a revolving magnetic field, and an interior rotor attached to the output shaft produces a second rotating magnetic field.
The input frequency of the alternating current provided to the stator coils controls the speed of an AC motor, which is directly proportional.
AC motors are required where there is a need for high speed and variable torque. As the frequency increases, the speed of the motor increases. Variable frequency drive controllers adjust the input frequency as desired to produce the desired motor speed.
Applications: AC motors are used in several applications, including food service pumps, hydraulic pumps, irrigation pumps, water heaters, lawn and garden equipment, power drives for compressors, air conditioning compressors, ceiling fans, mixer grinders, and portable power tools, and other machines.
