Project  Overview

The Tengger Desert Solar Park, located in Zhongwei, Ningxia, China, is one of the largest solar parks in the world. Spanning approximately 1,200 km2 within the vast 36,700 km2 desert area, this project covers 3% of the desert with solar panels. With a capacity of 1,547 megawatts (MW) and featuring around 3.5 million solar modules, it is developed and operated by the State Grid Corporation of China and Zhongwei Power Supply Co. This solar power plant exemplifies China's leadership in renewable energy, contributing significantly to global efforts in sustainable development and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The development began in 2012 and consisted of 45 interconnected grid projects. It was commissioned in 2016. It is among the world's top ten solar photovoltaic (PV) power stations

Project Background

The Tengger Desert Solar Park, also known as the "Great Wall of Solar," was constructed as part of China's efforts to transition to renewable energy and reduce its carbon footprint. It is  fifth-largest globally and second-largest solar project in China.

China’s total solar installed capacity has increased to 176 GW including the 1.5 GW capacity of Tengger desert solar park. The solar energy generation in this plant is supplied as clean energy to upto 600,000 households through the China National Grid; with the expansion of this project by two more phases, the project capacity will total 3GW from 1 GW. This initiative aligns with China's broader goals of increasing its renewable energy capacity and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, as announced by President Xi Jinping in 2020.?

Technical Specifications

The Tengger Desert Solar Park is built using over 4 million solar panels arranged in rows and generates electricity through solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. These panels are interconnected to inverters, facilitating the conversion of DC electricity into AC electricity suitable for grid integration. The Tengger Desert Solar Park's output is delivered to Hunan Province in southeast China via an 800 kV ultra-high voltage transmission line.
