Project Overview

The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is a 701 km long 6-lane expressway in Maharashtra. It is also known as the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The project aims to improve road connectivity and reduce travel time between Nagpur and Mumbai. Once operational, completely, the expressway will act as a gateway for national and international markets.

The expressway passes through 390 villages and 10 districts of Maharashtra. It links the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai and the Nagpur Multimodal International Hub Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN).

The Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway stretches through some of the crucial districts of Maharashtra. It includes Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Jalna, Aurangabad, Nashik, Buldhana, Ahmednagar, and Thane. At the Mumbai entry gates, authorities will conduct tire checks, air pressure monitoring, and breathalyzer tests to ensure road safety compliance.

Project Background

The Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway is officially named Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. It is one of India's most ambitious infrastructure projects, aiming to enhance connectivity and boost growth in the state. It is the only expressway in the country to enjoy a maximum speed of 150 km/hr (75 m/hr). This highest speed will reduce travel time from 16 hours to 8 hours.

The project originated as a part of Maharashtra’s vision to relieve congestion in Mumbai and revive investment in Vidarbha and Marathwada. It is designed as a multifaceted development initiative. It includes nodes for the agri-business, IT Parks, manufacturing zones, and logistics hubs. As a result, it created multiple jobs and witnessed industrial growth along its route.

The project was announced in 2015, and work on the route was started. Further, the land acquisition work kicked off in 2017. In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project.

Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Completion Date

Out of a 701 km long expressway, 625 km is operational to the public. The remaining 76 km stretch from Bhiwandi to Igatpuri was expected to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 1 May 2025. However, due to delays faced, it is expected to be inaugurated soon, marking the completion of the Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway.
