Project Overview

The FPSO Terra Nova project is a major offshore oil and gas development operated by Suncor Energy. It was the first in North America to utilize Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) technology in a harsh weather environment, including icebergs.

The Terra Nova FPSO has a storage capacity of 960,000 barrels of oil and can accommodate up to 120 personnel. Currently, the FPSO Terra Nova is fully operational following the completion of the Terra Nova Asset Life Extension project in 2023.

FPSO Terra Nova Location

The Terra Nova FPSO project is located approximately 350 kilometers east of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. The FPSO is situated within the Jeanne d’Arc Basin in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Project Background

The Terra Nova oil field, discovered in 1984, became the second offshore oil project to be developed offshore Newfoundland. The project marked a milestone in North America by introducing FPSO technology in a harsh weather environment, overcoming the challenges posed by sea ice and icebergs in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin.

Production from the Terra Nova oil field began in 2002, utilizing the FPSO vessel to extract, store, and offload crude oil. The FPSO arrived at the field on August 21, 2001, and achieved first oil in January 2002.

In September 2021, the Terra Nova asset life extension (ALE) project was sanctioned to extend the production life of the field by approximately 10 years. This added an estimated 70 million barrels of recoverable resources. As part of the ALE project, the FPSO Terra Nova was sent for maintenance and upgrades, sailing from Newfoundland and Labrador to Ferrol, Spain, in December 2021. 

The Suncor Terra Nova vessel underwent hull repairs, rust removal, insulation upgrades, and the replacement of two million kilograms of mooring chains with new ones before its scheduled return to Canada. Although the FPSO was initially expected to resume production in early 2023, it arrived back in Canada in August 2023. 

Terra Nova Oil and Gas Field

The Terra Nova oil field is located on the Grand Banks, approximately 350 kilometers southeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland, and 35 kilometers southeast of the Hibernia oil field. The field comprises multiple producing wells, along with water and gas injection wells, which contribute to production from three primary zones: the Graben, East Flank, and Far East blocks. 

Operated by Suncor Energy, the Terra Nova field is jointly owned by three partners: 

• Suncor Energy 48%

• Cenovus Energy – 34%

• Murphy Oil Corporation – 18% 

The FPSO-based extraction model enables continuous operation in the challenging offshore conditions of the North Atlantic. The Terra Nova field is expected to continue producing oil for another decade with the asset life extension (ALE) project.

The initial development cost of the Terra Nova project was USD 2.8 billion. The life extension program received USD 205 million in financial support through federal funding, facilitated by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

FPSO Terra Nova Current Status and Future Prospects

As of March 2025, the Terra Nova FPSO is fully operational and producing oil from the Terra Nova field. The life extension program of the FPSO vessel concluded with extensive repairs and upgrades. The hull maintenance, swivel unit improvements, and subsea work were done in 2023. This has enabled the vessel to resume production, with expectations to continue until approximately 2033. 

Conclusion

The FPSO Terra Nova is one of the largest FPSO vessels in Canada. The offshore oil production asset by Suncor Energy Inc. is overcoming harsh environmental challenges through innovative FPSO technology. Following the successful completion of the life extension program in 2023, the vessel resumed full operation and continued production from the Terra Nova oil field. The Terra Nova floating production unit is expected to support oil extraction until at least 2033 with the upgrades.
