Zayo Europe (Fiber Infrastructure Owner & Operator) has launched its first Point of Presence in Bucharest, Romania, marking a significant expansion of the company's IP footprint into Southeast Europe and adding to a string of regional investments the provider has pursued in 2026.

A New Node in Romania's Largest Interconnection Hub

The new PoP is located within NXDATA-1 Bucharest  Data Center DC, which the company describes as the largest carrier-neutral data center and interconnection hub in Romania.

The facility serves as the country's primary interconnection point for telecom operators, internet service providers, cloud platforms, content networks, and enterprise customers, making it a strategically significant location for Zayo Europe to anchor its regional presence.

The deployment was announced, with Zayo Europe positioning the site as a gateway for local and international network providers, cloud platforms, and enterprise customers seeking improved access to its pan-European backbone infrastructure.

Services and Technical Capabilities

The Bucharest PoP will deliver 100GE-enabled Tier 1 IP Transit services alongside advanced DDoS mitigation capabilities. These services are targeted at telecom operators, internet service providers, and content providers operating across Romania and the broader Southeast Europe region.

As a Tier 1 IP provider, Zayo Europe is bringing direct access to its pan-European backbone into the NXDATA-1 facility, enabling what the company characterizes as high-performance, scalable connectivity suited to bandwidth-intensive applications.

The integration is also designed to improve latency and overall connectivity performance by placing Zayo Europe's infrastructure within one of Europe's more densely interconnected environments.

The company states that the PoP enables resilient, low-latency packet services for enterprise customers across its pan-European network, with route diversity serving as a key benefit for organizations that depend on continuous connectivity.

Part of a Broader Regional Push

Colman Deegan, CEO at Zayo Europe, framed the Bucharest deployment as part of a deliberate and continuing investment strategy in Southeast Europe. In his remarks, Deegan pointed to earlier expansion activity in Sofia, Bulgaria, as context for the Bucharest move, describing it as a complementary step in the company's regional growth trajectory.

"Southeast Europe is increasingly becoming a connectivity hub for the continent, offering strategic routes into the global ecosystem," Deegan said. "Expanding into Bucharest perfectly complements the growth we have already seen in Sofia, Bulgaria, this year and represents a key step in our continued investment in the region."

Deegan also cited rising bandwidth demand driven by artificial intelligence adoption and cloud migration as underlying forces shaping Zayo Europe's infrastructure decisions, noting that enterprise and digital ecosystem partners would benefit from greater network resilience and route diversity as a result of the new deployment.

NXDATA's Role and Regional Ambitions

NXDATA operates two data center facilities in Bucharest, NXDATA-1 and NXDATA-2, and is currently developing a third facility, NXDATA-3, near Bucharest with an IT capacity of three megawatts.

The company positions itself as a critical infrastructure provider enabling traffic exchange across Southeast Europe. Sorin Andone, Managing Director at NXDATA, described the arrival of Zayo Europe as a strengthening of Bucharest's standing as a regional connectivity gateway.

Andone highlighted the importance of bringing a Tier 1 global network operator with extensive fiber infrastructure into the NXDATA ecosystem, saying it would enhance the quality, diversity, and traffic volumes across the regional telecom environment.

"We are proud to welcome Zayo Europe to NXDATA," Andone said. "This deployment strengthens our position as a regional interconnection hub and reinforces Bucharest's role as a key connectivity gateway for Southeast Europe."

Zayo Europe's Pan-European Scale

Zayo Europe operates a network spanning more than 3.3 million fiber kilometers and connects with eight subsea systems. The company's infrastructure reaches across sixteen countries and connects 47 markets, with more than 600 data centers connected through its network.

The company provides services to telecom service providers, cloud platforms, data centers, system integrators, and enterprises across the continent.

The addition of Bucharest to its PoP portfolio places Zayo Europe inside one of the region's most active interconnection environments at a time when Southeast Europe is drawing growing attention from network operators seeking to diversify routing options and reduce dependence on Western European transit paths.

Europe's Data Center Pipeline Is Moving Fast — Are You Keeping Up?

Every week across Europe, new data center developments are announced, tenders are issued, and contracts are awarded to those who move first. If your team is still relying on fragmented sources and manual research to track this activity, the opportunities you need are likely slipping past you unnoticed.

The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research was built to solve exactly this problem, aggregating and organizing project intelligence across Europe's data center sector into a single, structured, and continuously updated resource. From hyperscale campuses to edge facilities, the platform gives you a panoramic view of where investment is flowing and where it is heading next.

Whether you are a contractor, equipment supplier, investor, or developer, staying ahead of the market requires more than industry news — it requires verified project data delivered at the right moment in the development cycle.
