Technology group Wärtsilä has broadened its role in seven power plant projects under two contracts with Brazilian energy company Origem Energia, expanding previously announced engine supply to also include process engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities above ground level.
The original equipment supply contracts were booked in the first and second quarters of 2026, while the process EPC order was booked by Wärtsilä in the third quarter of 2026.
From Equipment Supply to Full Engineering and Construction
The projects were awarded in Brazil's 2026 Reserve Capacity Auction and represent 371 MW of flexible capacity intended to provide balancing power and support the reliability of the Brazilian grid as the share of renewable energy increases.
Plants Powered by Origem Energia's Own Gas Resources
The seven projects, Pilar Nova, Pilar, and Manguaba I–V, are located in Northeastern Brazil and will operate using Origem Energia's own onshore natural gas resources. Altogether, the plants will use 36 Wärtsilä 34SG balancing engines.
Levi Souto, Director of Power Plant Construction at Origem Energia, said the projects represent an important step in the company's strategy to develop an integrated energy platform connecting its natural gas resources to flexible power generation. By adding this capacity to Brazil's power system, Souto said, the company will contribute to greater reliability and resilience while advancing the development of a strategic energy hub in Alagoas.
He added that the expanded scope with Wärtsilä supports the execution of the investment and the delivery of the projects according to the required schedule and technical standards.

Wärtsilä Points to Execution Capabilities and Partnership
Gastón Giani, Energy Business Director for Region South, Americas, at Wärtsilä Energy, commented that the company's project execution capabilities are clearly reflected in the conversion of the original equipment supply contracts into the broader EPC scope.
According to Giani, all seven projects align with Wärtsilä's strengths in delivering flexible and reliable capacity, helping to maintain security of supply as the share of renewable energy increases.
He said the amendments reflect the strong partnership between the companies and Origem Energia's confidence in Wärtsilä's ability to deliver the complete power plant solution.
Commissioning Timetables
The equipment delivery and construction timetables are expected to align with the commissioning schedules for the respective power plants.
The Pilar Nova and Pilar plants are scheduled to commence commercial operation in October 2028, while the Manguaba I–V plants are scheduled to begin commercial operation in August 2029.

Powering Ahead: Track Brazil's Energy Boom Before Your Competitors Do
Brazil is racing to expand its power generation and transmission capacity, with billions of dollars flowing into hydroelectric upgrades, solar farms, wind corridors, and grid modernization programs. The question is, are you seeing these opportunities early enough to act on them?
Fragmented public announcements, slow-moving regulatory portals, and scattered tender bulletins make it nearly impossible to build a reliable picture of the region's project pipeline. Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research consolidates every stage of the project lifecycle into a single, intelligence-rich dashboard designed for power sector professionals.
From utility-scale renewables to transmission interconnects, you get decision-ready insights the moment projects move, not weeks after the news breaks.
