Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd (renewable energy company) has commenced operations at a Battery Energy Storage System container manufacturing facility in India, the company announced.

The launch represents the first milestone in a broader 20 GWh manufacturing roadmap set out by the firm, which operates as a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Limited.

Capacity Upgraded Before Launch

The facility opens with a rated capacity of 5.15 GWh, exceeding the originally planned 3.5 GWh. Waaree ESS attributed the upward revision to two factors: debottlenecking of production throughput and improved energy density of battery cells.

The company said the facility is designed to serve utility-scale customers as well as commercial and industrial applications, with a focus on delivering what it described as high-quality, reliable, and scalable energy storage solutions.

The manufacturing site incorporates Industry 4.0 technologies, including Automated Guided Vehicles, intelligent material handling systems, automated assembly lines, and advanced testing and quality assurance systems. Waaree ESS positioned these features as central to its ability to produce consistent, export-quality products from a domestic base.

Additional Facilities Planned for the Current Financial Year

The BESS container plant is the first of three facilities that Waaree ESS intends to operationalize within the current financial year. Alongside the container manufacturing unit, the company plans to bring online 5.15 GWh of battery pack manufacturing capacity, also uprated from an original 3.5 GWh target, and 3.5 GWh of lithium cell manufacturing capacity.

The combination of lithium cell production, battery pack assembly, and BESS container manufacturing is intended to create what the company described as an integrated domestic energy storage ecosystem.

Waaree ESS said that bringing all three stages of the supply chain under one roof would reduce India's dependence on imported technologies and support faster delivery to customers.

Strategic Context: Grid Stability and Renewable Integration

The announcement comes as India continues to expand its solar and wind power capacity, placing growing pressure on grid operators to manage intermittent generation.

Waaree ESS noted that battery energy storage systems have become critical infrastructure for storing renewable energy generated during daylight hours and supplying it during periods of peak demand.

The company stated that BESS deployment improves grid stability, reduces the curtailment of renewable energy that would otherwise be wasted, and limits the need for conventional peaking power plants that typically rely on fossil fuels.

Energy storage, according to the company, will play a central role in supporting India's renewable energy targets and enabling what it described as a resilient, low-carbon power system.

Alignment with Government Manufacturing Initiatives

Waaree ESS framed its investment explicitly within the context of the Indian government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat policy frameworks, both of which are designed to encourage domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.

The company said that locally manufactured energy storage solutions would offer customers benefits including quality assurance and faster delivery timelines compared with imported alternatives.

Sunil Rathi, Director at Waaree, commented on the significance of the facility opening. "Battery Energy Storage Systems are the backbone of a renewable-powered future. As India accelerates its clean energy transition, reliable and domestically manufactured energy storage will be essential for ensuring grid stability, energy security, and sustainable growth," he said.

Rathi added that the commencement of the BESS container facility marked an important step toward building a fully integrated energy storage ecosystem. "With planned capacities of 3.5 GWh lithium cells and 5.15 GWh battery packs, Waaree ESS is committed to delivering world-class, Made-in-India energy storage solutions that empower our customers and contribute to India's vision of becoming a global clean energy manufacturing hub," he stated.

Company Background and Manufacturing Ambitions

Waaree Energy Storage Solutions was established to develop advanced battery technologies and integrated energy storage solutions for utilities, commercial and industrial customers, and infrastructure projects. It sits within the broader Waaree Energies group, which operates across solar module manufacturing, renewable energy development, and related sectors.

The 20 GWh manufacturing roadmap that Waaree ESS has outlined positions the company as one of the more ambitious domestic players in India's energy storage manufacturing space.

The current financial year's targets, totaling more than 13 GWh across three facility types, represent a significant portion of that long-term goal. Whether and how quickly the company achieves the full 20 GWh target will depend on the pace at which the battery pack and lithium cell facilities are brought online in the coming months.
