Voyager Station, the world's first commercial space hotel, is set to debut in 2027. Orbital Assembly Corporation, a construction company controlled by John Blincow, is planning the project, which will accommodate 280 guests and 112 crew workers. The station will be OAC's first major project and will simulate 1/6th of Earth's gravity. Voyager will be the largest man-made structure in space when complete.
Construction on the 50,000-square-meter Voyager facility will begin in 2026, with the first passengers arriving in 2027, according to OAC. The idea is made possible, according to the researchers, by allowing construction, resource gathering, development, and infrastructure in low Earth orbit and beyond. OAC intends to take advantage of the lower launch costs as well as the increased reliability and safety. The hotel will have Over 11,600 m2 (125,000 sf) of habitable space in modules and access tubes and will have 44 Emergency Return Vehicles (ERVs) in case of any emergencies.
The space hotel will serve traditional 'space food' like freeze-dried ice cream and have recreation activities that use the reduced gravity of the hotel to their advantage, such as basketball.
Space tourism is becoming a hot topic, and several companies are attempting to make it a reality, including Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic and Elon Musk's SpaceX.
Although no room rates have been announced, the team hopes to make the cost comparable to that of a cruise ticket in the future. The central un-pressurized ring structure that will house the docking hub will be the first element of the rotating hotel to be built.
