Vingroup Proposes 3GW Offshore Wind Farm in Southern Vietnam to Boost Regional Exports
Vietnam's Vingroup has proposed building a 3GW offshore wind project in southern Vietnam through its renewable energy subsidiary VinEnergo. The initiative is designed to serve as an export hub to nearby countries like Malaysia while also powering local businesses and homes.
Project Location and Government Support
The proposed wind farm would be situated in Ca Mau province at the southernmost point of Vietnam. The province has been recognized for a considerable time as a promising location for offshore wind energy due to its robust and consistent wind patterns.
To Minh Duong, the deputy head of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, mentioned that the government has sanctioned plans to allocate up to 15GW of offshore wind power capacity in the region. This indicates significant government backing for offshore wind development in the area.
Government Meeting and Development Strategy
During a meeting held between government officials and VinEnergo representatives, the company presented its proposal for the 3GW project. Lam Van Bi, an acting vice-chairman of the provincial People's Committee, provided guidance on the project's development approach.
Bi encouraged Vingroup to focus on researching technologies for transmission, mechanisms for capacity release, and the development of load systems. He also suggested the need to concentrate on a holistic investment strategy that intertwines renewable energy initiatives with large-scale manufacturing and business developments to enhance on-site electricity use and maximize overall value.
Next Steps and Timeline
Bi expressed optimism that both parties would quickly resolve key matters and move towards finalizing a memorandum of understanding. This agreement would boost the advancement of green energy in Ca Mau province.
The meeting represents a significant step forward in Vietnam's offshore wind development plans, with the 3GW project potentially serving as a cornerstone for the region's renewable energy expansion and export capabilities to neighboring Southeast Asian countries.
