Military-run telecom giant Viettel on Tuesday announced major data center and research and development projects in Hanoi, with total investment capital exceeding USD 1 billion. The groundbreaking ceremony marked the launch of two significant facilities as part of a nationwide initiative celebrating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.

Major Infrastructure Projects Launch

The two key developments include the An Khanh Data Center and the Viettel Research & Development Center, both reaffirming Viettel's pioneer role in executing the Politburo's Resolution 57-NQ/TW. This resolution focuses on building a national network of research centers and high-tech laboratories aimed at advancing strategic technologies.

The projects represent part of Vietnam's broader celebration of 250 key projects being inaugurated and launched to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).

Viettel Research & Development Center Details

The Viettel R&D Center will span 13 hectares in the Hanoi-based Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park, with an investment of VND10 trillion (USD 380 million). The facility will comprise six smart buildings and is expected to be completed by 2030. The center is designed to serve as a comprehensive R&D complex, handling the whole cycle from research and design to prototyping and manufacturing of high-tech “Made in Vietnam” products.

The facility will support Viettel's ambitions in both defense and civilian technologies, covering areas from propulsion systems, UAVs, remote sensing satellites, and radar systems to advanced civilian applications in Big Data, AI, and cloud computing. All technologies developed at the center are tailored to meet both national defense needs and global tech trends.

The facility is designed to meet international standards and integrates smart, green, and sustainable features while ensuring top-tier safety and cybersecurity. The center is expected to attract 2,500 high-skilled professionals and support the national goal of modernizing the army through advanced military equipment production.

An Khanh Data Center Specifications

The An Khanh Data Center represents an investment of VND 17.5 trillion (USD 664.9 million) on a 1.9-hectare site in Hanoi's An Khanh commune. The facility will offer a designed capacity of 60 MW, making it the largest data center in northern Vietnam. Phase 1 of the data center is set to go live in Q2/2026, with plans to expand it into Viettel's second hyperscale data center by 2030.

The facility is built to Uptime Tier III standards and will feature in-house AI developed by Viettel, a five-layer security system, and cutting-edge cooling technologies. The data center is designed to operate sustainably and align with the government's Net Zero emissions target. It will play a vital role in Vietnam's digital transformation, serving the government, the Ministry of National Defense, major enterprises, and national-scale AI applications.

Expanded Infrastructure Development

In 2025, Viettel will accelerate the construction of other key tech infrastructure projects beyond the Hanoi facilities. The company is developing the Tan Phu Trung Data Center in the southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City and the Viettel Tower in the central city of Da Nang. These additional projects further expand Viettel's high-tech footprint to support both national defense and digital transformation goals across Vietnam.

The developments represent a comprehensive approach to building technological infrastructure throughout the country's major urban centers. The groundbreaking ceremonies were attended by high-level government officials, including Party chief To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who participated in Tuesday's events celebrating the launch of 250 key projects nationwide.

The projects span multiple sectors and represent significant investment in Vietnam's infrastructure and technological capabilities as the country marks its national anniversary milestones.
